Thank you for this overview. I bought this machine 4 years ago. It is my first serger and I really haven’t figured out more than the basics. I do not have an alternate machine so it is both my serger and coverstitch.

Happy new year from Greece!! I am considering buying this for coverstitch only same as you! I think i will as i have a serger already witch i love the baby lock vibtator! Thank you for the review! I too own a pfaff 620 and i love it! The only issue i had was the pause for rest, but i solved it by lowering the speed on heavy fsbrics and buying the teflon foot! 🌸🌸🌸

Wow! So alike in our machines. I'll look into a teflon foot! When I took it to the dealer they said to quit using the metal bobbins (oops.) Something about magnets with the electronics. 🤷‍♀️ but it is working much better since I did that!

@@seasonallyproductive Hallo again ! I do not use mettal bobbins at all but I sew a lot of denims so it is too bulky . You can buy the foots from ebay if you find the foots too expensive from your dealer afterall the machine is made in taiwan not in Germany!!

@seasonallyproductive 4 жыл бұрын
Yes, unfortunately they're not German made.

For finishing, stop stitching; raise front of foot then use your tweezers to pull needle thread out to create a loop. Cut the thread which leaves thread allowance for needle as well as thread allowance to be pulled through fabric when you remove the fabric from the presser foot. After you have removed the fabric and the loose ends are flopping around the looper, tie them in a knot and you are finished and secure. Thanks for you pfaff serger videos.

I use this a lot, both as a serger and as a coverstitch, love it. Only have this machine and a Janome 3160, and feel that they are a perfect match, I don't really need anything more.

Came here for the review. I’ve used industrial cover stitch and sergers in school. We learned when using the cover stitch to finish you just go over the stitches again at the end. So if you’re doing a hem, when you get back to the beginning of your stitching again, just go over top of those stitches about an inch then snip.
@seasonallyproductive

I've made a habit of that but I do find they still pull off occasionally. After inspection of RTW clothes I'm sure that's what sweat shops do too!

I have this machine but haven’t tried the cover lock part yet.We didn’t get along very well at first but we are starting to get on a little better now. When I can get it to work right it does really nice serging.

Hi, I like yr video! Before I start I should say that I am an experienced sewer, I have many machine and love the older more solid type. I have some Pfaffs so decided on this make. I sew and serge with a serger so only really wanted to do coverlock. Also it’s overlock is good but much slower than my old baby lock serger. Unfortunately I have a huge heap of trouble with mine. I bought it about 4-5 years ago managed to do coverlock on a lot of hems and sleeves. Then something happened . It started to miss and drop stitches mainly on wrong side. So I spent days (with much patience) trying to get it right again. Changed needles, which I could use on my other machines as perfectly ok, changed thread, tried changing tensions and rethreading probably 50 times. Eventually I got it working without skipping stitches. Wow! But I left it anyway for a year or two, not believing in my luck and not sewing much stretch fabric. So, I got it out again as I had cut out lots of kids clothes in jersey, and low and behold, it skipping again! What am I to do? I am really fed up with this and wish I had bought a second hand coverlock only for that purpose! Thanks for yr video!

Oof. Sounds super frustrating! My recommendation would be to take it to your dealer or local repair person to look at. Could maybe be a timing issue 🤷🏼‍♀️

Thanks for yr answer. Unfortunately I bought it from an online shop. Don’t know why, as I found a store nearby selling them. I guess I cud still ask them. Could be timing that true. Sue

Sadly modern sewing machines are meant to break down. So many weak points in the construction that it is cheaper to buy a new one rather to get the old one repaired. Second hand from the 70s or sooner are said to be the ones that would last you a lifetime and more.

I am shopping for a cover-stitch machine. I own a 16 yr old Baby Lock sewing machine and a 10 year old serger, a Bernina 930 sewing machine, and a Singer Genie. I don't sew as much as I used to, but hope to be able to do more. Medical issues restrict my ability to stand long enough to cut out a pattern from start to finish, so smaller projects have kept me sewing. Under these circumstances I am having a hard time justifying the cost of yet another machine. Still on the fence! 🤔

I also bought this for the Coverstitch; for $400 about 3 years ago. I previously bought a Bernina 2500dce, but it's Coverstitch will not work, but got an amazing deal $75, and it serger is amazing. I'm learning to make my own exercise clothes. They make it look so easy! Sometimes I get a perfect stitch, then some skipped stitches. Was soooooo frustrated, then finally figured out I went over the handle. MUST GO UNDER, AS YOU STATED. What needles are you using?

God bless you for that reminder about under the handle. I spent about 4 hrs and couldnt get the looper stitch on the edge instead of under - then I read your comment and bingo its working again. I bought mine off a friend who was struggling to sell it (because it really needs patience to thread unlike the newer ones) and needed the money. I

I just bought one of these second hand to help me with finishing very stretchy knits - I mostly make gymnastics leotards. I’ve tried a few times now and it just will not work for me! On a woven I can get an ok line of stitching but it’s tunnelling, on a knit I can’t get anything. The left needle just skips every single stitch and I get a weird chain around the right needle thread.. any tips for a coverstitch beginner?

There’s a series of videos from Sewing Warehouse that walk you through using every feature of this machine. The one on the coverhem (kzbin.info/www/bejne/jJuyqnaleMZ_bbs) suggests that at the end of the coverhem turning the handwheel backwards one full rotation and then pinching the fabric and pulling the threads out of the machine. This is the only way I was able to get a good result. When I didn’t do the one backwards rotation of the handwheel I couldn’t get the threads to pull out of the machine. As long as I do it this way the threads pull, and it works like a charm. I also really like the preset tensions as it only requires small adjustments if any. I mainly use this machine as a serger as I don’t sew a lot of knit garments. I agree that the handle design was not a good one, but unlike you, that presser foot lifter drives me crazy!!! I’ve had the machine for a while now and it seems just as awkward now as it did when I got it

Thanks, I'll have to check out that channel! The lady who sold me the machine at the dealership told me to remove the fabric that way. I've tried some other methods and just can't get them to work as nice, either

i have the coverlock 4.0 and i hate it, feed dogs are useless and the motor lacks serious power, cant sew at slow speeds and the knife causes jams as it lacks power to cut.

I also hate my 4.0! I also find the lower looper will often hit the needle plate if it's screwed all the way down. It's an odd set up. I so wish I didn't sell my Bernina l460 overlocker 😢
