Pfaff Quilt Expression 720 35 Manual Buttonholes

Is it correct that when I place my needle down at the spot where I want my buttonhole to start (I find it easier to see the placement that way) that it often malfunctions and keeps sewing straight backwards and doesnt start making the buttonhole? It has happened many times to me and I am wondering if there is any way to fix it. I only used the automatic buttonhole foot and the standard button hole setting so far.
