The best tutorial for product visualization I’ve seen in years! Picked up a few tricks for myself from this video, excellent work!

Loving these short clips, Its refreshing to have them come from someone who primarily does automotive renders. Is there a reason that you have bitmaps plugged into the lights as opposed to native ramp/gradient maps within max?

I used 32 bit exrs with alphas. This allows me to have my light sources have transparent characteristics, so if I was to render on a white background you would not see a black rim from the softbox. Also, with it being a map from photoshop it allows me to have smoother gradients than I can achieve within 3D Max. Hope that helps answer your question?

@@AutomotiveCGI Interesting, makes sense. From my understanding mapping black into a light(with a ramp) gives you the transparency(in maya, not sure bout max.), but yeah if you get more control from a bitmap so be it. Just thought I'd ask thanks.

@@nasgeorgellis1409 I think that might be the difference. I mean, if I do a composite in Max with the alpha to make it transparent it def works, however I still hate the gradient ramps in max due to the blur not being extremely smooth, so I stick to creating the hdr maps in photoshop.

@@AutomotiveCGI I did a test in maya as I didnt reeeally think it made a difference, but yes! Exactly as youre saying, you simply cant get a smooth a falloff as photoshop!

@@AutomotiveCGI when placing the lights around the car there is feature called "place highlights" where you click on the part of the car and the light looks at the normal and is placed in 3D accordingly. like a poor mans version of lightmaps hdri studio light.

@@7ens3nButt0n Ohh! Yeap I know about that method, thats the place highlight tool, I use it every now an then, not much. I personally just like moving a light like I would in real life to make sure its realistic, otherwise I sometimes get lights underground hahaha
