Actually this is the correct stance by bjp. This is related to upcoming demographic distribution in next 10 years. Although Hindu population is 70%, the tfr is negative so we Hindus will rapidly shrink. Many old people will die in next 10 yrs. Very well explained. Everyone was flummoxed by the loss of Yogiji & Smriti Irani, among others. Now we know. I guess the top brass of the BJP has realised this too by now. Nadda must be removed. Mr. Shivraj Singh Chauhan must be made Party President to invigorate the ground level workers & local leaders with enthusiasm. It is unwise of the cadre to be lazy & complacent, riding piggyback on Mr. Modi & Yogiji's popularity to win elections. Winning a seat is fine. They need to work among the people to be able to retain the seat. The BJP's IT cell & it's Publicity/marketing cell needs to thoroughly revamped, overhauled, updated. Even school & college students would have done a better job. Nadda must be held responsible not only for selection of wrong candidates, for not doing due diligence, for not being able to grasp ground realities, but also for making the very indiscreet & arrogant statement regarding the RSS. This is the most credible story explaining the reasons for loss of so many seats in UP. I could even summarize it to say that 1) where the BJP had a chance and thought the opposition was strong, they were not complacent, worked hard and got every voter to the booth - Bihar, Delhi, Odisha, MP, TG 2) where BJP was super strong and felt nothing could dislodge them, their workers were complacent and didn’t work hard - UP, Gujarat and RJ 3) BJP tried its best but the state was ruled by a very strong party - WB, KA, etc 4) States which BJP took seriously like KL, TN and AP though they had very little chance, they increased their vote share

I think the biggest issue was low voter turnout in places like UP and Maharashtra. The opinion polls before the election was pointing to landslide victory for BJP. That set in complacency among the BjP/NDA voters. They figured BJP is going to win anyway and did not take the trouble to vote. The non BJP voters did not have the complacency because they were losing and were motivated to vote. The other major reason is the freebies the opposition offered like the one lake rupees they were offering. BJP did not offer freebies but were running on development and visions for future. The people were lured by instant gratification and sacrificing future progress for themselves and their children.

Thanks to Shri Iyer and PGurus for a very interesting discussion with Shantanu Gupta. He repudiated some of the rumors about Yogi ji's recommendations for candidates being ignored by the higher decision-makers. The BJP machinery reportedly works systematically over selecting candidates who are electable. Obviously their grass-roots workers need to be more vigilant and responsive to misinformation ( such as Constitutional changes to end reservations) being spread at smaller meetings by the opposition. As Shantanu ji said, it was the combination of the caste card, particularly 'MY' being used by Akhilesh Yadav of Samajwadi Party and the freebies ('Guarantee card,' etc) particularly targeting minority women, that worked for them this time

This is an excellent explanation. You are all missing what INDIA meets were doing. We used to laugh at them. What I observed is ; they used their caders to do a murmering campaign. Where ever they go ; they get in to conversation with lower strata of society and talk make explicit comment against Modiji. Also ; the INDIA alliance effectively micromanaged situations in many constituencies.

It is not only in UP, everywhere including in West Bengal large number of voters were intended to vote for BJP but they didn't only because BJP Candidates were unknown to them. Candidate and his representative even did not reach the Voters. There were no door to door campaign. Many workers and office bearers of BJP became very very proudy. These office bearers lost patience to listen to poor and middle class people. Finally BJP shouldn't give tickets to immediately incoming person from opponent parties. First let them prove their credibility and then give ticket.
