I feel as if Goku and Vegeta are more than just rivals. Even as Vegeta has shown his nasty heart, Goku knew he could be a better person. Him and Vegeta were right there, growing in mind heart and body. As Goku, a low level Saiyan grew in power, so did the Prince. Also, Goku showed Vegeta something he never had his entire life, kindness. Their relationship probably only makes sense to Full-blooded Saiyans. I feel like the stronger their bodies became, so did their bond.

The true DBZ fans will know that at the time when this fight was written, Akira himself said he hadn’t come up with ssj3 yet so there actually wasn’t any ssj3 for goku to turn into in the first place. Ssj3 was a later concept and I believe that’s why it essentially got no real love and why it just kinda seem like a rushed form.

it amazes me how people say Goku was holding back. He wasn't, they are both equal in power and opportunity because they both chose to just stay in ssj2 and that's the cap for all their abilities. So Goku was giving his all here, just like if they both decided to stay in base form without any powerups. diyking is correct, Super Saiyan 3 wasn't conceived at that time in the manga. In terms of the overall plot, he did have access to it, but the actual idea to use the transformation wasn't until a few chapters later. It also wasnt a case of holding back. The Dragon Ball fandom likes to take that narrative and run with it, as with many other vague instances, and pass it off as fact. In hindsight, we can make the argument he was holding back, especially if we look through Vegeta's POV, but Goku himself says the transformation was untested. It wasn't something he could've used against Vegeta without drawbacks either: - The amount of time it took to transform. - The amount of time Goku had left on Earth would have been massively shortened, just as it was against Buu and on the lookout. It would have been wasted against Vegeta, not to mention that Vegeta wasn't a significant enough threat to warrant the use of SSJ3. TL;DR: Not using SSJ3 was less about holding back and more about being a major inconvenience. I get it though, it's more entertaining to say he held back just to clown Vegeta.
