Always loved how much Andrea put into legitimately appearing to be a supernatural force. They always talk that up with batman but eventually batman talks, batman pulls out something that's obviously a gadget, batman asks you a question in a human voice and sounds very much like a human detective. Criminals fear of Batman is more a fear of inevitability because they know how determined and skilled he is. But everything Phantasm does is tailored to reinforce their grim reaper schtick and damn does it sell it.

I love the storytelling in this movie so much. How they make you think the Phantasm is actually Andrea's father getting revenge on the mafia for ruining his and his daughter's life, but there are subtle hints throughout the film that the Phantasm could also be Andrea like the self-defense class she tells Bruce about when he's practicing jujitsu, knowing what part of the city Bruce was at after Batman and the Phantasm's fight on the rooftops, the way she says that she came back to Gotham because the mob "needed to pay", how we transition from a scene of Andrea crying on her bed after Batman interrogates her to the scene of the Phantasm going after Valestra. I also love the visual storytelling of the House of the Future. How at the beginning it's used to symbolize Bruce and Andrea's blossoming romance and how later it's a ruined mess because Gotham has become crime-ridden and corrupt in the decades since which is symbolized by the Joker walking around like a virus. Then during the climax it's destroyed with explosives symbolizing how Bruce & Andrea's relationship has been destroyed forever. Really smart, touching and beautifully animated film that will always hold up against time because of the combination of 40s & 90s aesthetics. Definitely one of my favorites from my childhood. My grandpa and I used to watch this movie all the time on VHS back in the early 2000s (I know, I'm old XD) so I have certain lines, transitions, sound effects and pieces of music burned into my mind forever.

It's still one of my favorites of the Batman animated movies, I actually saw it in theaters back when I was 6 so it's got a special place in my heart for sure. The story telling and character motivations were done extremely well, Bruce and Andrea in the end were clearly both damaged and demented people at the same time. Bruce has nothing in his life but being Batman, and Andrea has nothing else but her work as an assassin it highlights the fact of what a dark character Batman is from the beginning.

The mist, I have NO idea what any of that is in all honesty, but it may relate to some more training behind the scenes? Would also explain the other fighting.
