It was originally supposed to be for the Sega CD, but they decided partway through development to release it on the Genesis instead because of how much of a failure the Sega CD was.

That Sega yell infamously took up a TON of space on the cartridges, equal to several levels! Sega was nothing if not committed to their branding. :)

@zedo0 I've played all 4 of the 8 & 16 bit games. I was referring to the canceled Sega CD game. Probably would have been something similar to Lunar. bummer

Even back then Sega knew that Phantasy Star 3 was the worst. It's the only commercial that doesn't show any gameplay, and has visuals that have nothing at all to do with the game.
