+Niamh Reuben long answer soz... but it's important for the phandom to know. the phandom grew really quickly in 2012 and there were also some privacy issues happening at the same time. the rumors and stress were really hard on both dan and phil. dan had to reach out to / lash out at some members of the phandom to remove private content from interweb circulation. 2012 is what is known as dan's "no-homo howell" phase, where he did as much as he could to distance himself from phan-shipping, any apparent relationship-ness with phil, and would get mad if anyone questioned his sexuality. this is particularly apparent whenever dan and phil they appear together in live-shows like this one where he doesn't want to encourage the phan-shippers and won't sit too close to or touch phil. pinof 4 is another example where they barely touch, their laughs are more forced, and the whole thing is awkward and seems like neither of them want to be there. i often can't watch 2012 dan videos because it makes me sad. it looks like they were growing out of it mid-2013 (around august 2013's the day in the life in London), but dan was still cautious to mention phil in live-shows. everything was "i, me, my" pronouns, and he would say things like "my friend was in the kitchen" rather than "phil was in the kitchen." things like that. 2014, and especially 2015 are progressively better between dan and phil. dan went back to labeling himself as a "sexually ambiguous nerd." they've embraced the world of dan and phil, and everything in almost all their videos is "we, our, dan & phil" now ("we bought" "we're home" "our lives" etc). the gaming channel, japan, the book, tour, phil trash #1... all embraces the dual world of dan AND phil. 2015 was a good year for phan and they seem to be very genuinely happy now. but 2012 was sad. i still vote for respecting their privacy because i'm terrified of the phandom pushing them back to 2012... or gods forbid prompting "goodbye internet."
