So we watched this in class, and the reason the Phantom lets Christine and Raoul go is because he is symbollically a beaten, wounded animal. So when Christine kisses him, and shows him the slightest of affection, he is so shocked that maybe he can be loved, he is grateful towards Christine for proving to him some sort of heart-stirring thing, he lets her and her love go, 'cause on the inside he really does know that Christine and Raoul love eachother and Christine could never be happy with him.

This is my favorite part of the movie. I always tear up when they are all singing together.. It's so beautifully emotional. And it's not just sad for the phantom. It always gets me the way raul(sorry if I spelt his name wrong) says "I tried so hard to free you." and Christine says "angel of music, you deceived me" then the phantom has his moment when he sings the masquerade song. So so sad, it all breaks my heart.

I heard about the sequel. Apparently Love Never Dies have bad reviews everywhere. Should I go see it? I love Phantom of the Opera and am really apprehensive about watching the sequel for fear of getting severely disappointed. Should I let the story die at 'it's over now.. the music of the night' and not risk it? Is the story good? Is the music as good as those composed in the Phantom? Thanks.

The sad thing is, his face doesn't even look that bad. I know that in the book, he's described as being much more hideous than he appears here, but talking about this version, I know that back in the time this takes place, people were much less accepting. Fun fact: In the book, getting engaged to Raoul is Erik's idea. He recognizes Raoul makes Christine happy and really doesn't have a problem with her indulging in that; of course, it's not as sweet as it could be, considering it's also always meant to be a temporary arrangement. Raoul was due to leave the country on naval duties, so the idea was Christine could have fun with him until he left. However, Christine and Raoul decide they want to run away together instead (which they do in the end, despite the death of Raoul's older brother the count, leaving his position with no one to fill it, because who cares about responsibility when you have twoo wuv?), which does piss the Phantom off. The Phantom is also a lot more batshit crazy in the book. The falling chandelier occurs about halfway through and isn't that big a deal, killing one person and causing quite a fuss but being repaired quickly. In the end conflict, he threatens to blow up the entire theater! He forces Christine to choose between himself and Raoul via turning one of two figurines; the one that signifies her choosing Raoul is set to ignite barrels upon barrels of gunpowder. "When the grasshopper is turned, it hops! It hops!" Needless to say it's a much more intricate and higher tension scene, ahaha. Of course, that's only to name a very few differences.

Besides the fact that he has some mental issues because of his treatment all his life(which doesn't bother me we can work that out) if i was her i would have picked him. One Christine brought him so hope. Two he is willing to kill people for you.(This is on characteristic I preferably think he could do without) Three even though he is sooooooo damnnnnnnn wounded he still trusts her enough to love her. Four he knows pain he can relate to her. Damn this is one story that has some of the Beauty and the Breast elements that doesn't have the traditional ending.

Okay so here's my opinion on the phantom in this song/The Point Of No Return... Yes, I do understand that the phantom did bad things, out of anger, but you can tell in this song that he has a soft side, as well as in The Point Of No Return. All the Phantom wanted was to be loved by someone. And personally, I hate Raoul because he literally took Christine from the Phantom, his only love. I believe that the Phantom and Christine belong together, and I cry EVERYTIME she gives that ring back to him.

I don't think the fact that the Phantom "just wanted to be loved" justifies everything wrong he did in the rest of the play. Even if deep down he's just a lonely man looking for love, the fact remains that everything he actually did in the show was shitty and thus automatically makes him *completely unfit* to be with Christine. And I don't understand why you hate Raoul, when in the end he's just a regular guy trying to do the right thing by *not letting his childhood love get ensnared by a fucking murderer*.
@mermaidinthesea27 жыл бұрын
I agree girl!!!! Totally.
@alexkay34487 жыл бұрын
I mean, Phantom LITERALLY took Christine (Raoul's only love and childhood sweetheart) from Raoul twice, against her will. Then he took /Christine's/ only love and threatened to kill him to blackmail Christine into being imprisoned forever.The fact is that other than when Erik hypnotised her, Christine never indicated to the Phantom that she had any kind of romantic feelings for him. She cares for him, yes, but there is never any hint of romance from her end; only a kind of familial love. After all, she thinks that he was sent by her father. The Phantom's life is tragic, yes, but that doesn't make it Christine's responsibility to 'fix' everything or somehow cancel out all the lack of love he has received by loving him.In fact, by 'Why Are You Telling Me This' she's terrified of him. And he continues to torment her, scaring her even more. In 'Twisted Every Way' she talks about how he's stolen her chance to live, how he 'murders all that's good' and her terror that the Phantom will take her from Raoul and never let her go. She explicit says that, and then the Phantom does it. Yes, the Phantom has gone through horror and trauma, but he literally puts Christine through horror and trauma too. Not to mention the whole pretending-to-be-her-dead-dad-to-kidnap-her bit.I get why people romanticise this and get swept up in it. The Phantom is a very sympathetic villain. We want him to get a happy ending. And he is romantic. Music of The Night sweeps us all away. We all want someone to be that dark, handsome and unquestionably devoted to us. We all want our forbidden love story, for the underdog to triumph. But this isn't Christine 'choosing Raoul over the Phantom'. She always chose Raoul. The Phantom ruins her life. That's not love, not even from a person who's never been taught how to express love. If you love someone, you put them first. Always. That's what Christine does for Raoul and Raoul does for Christine. In the end, yes, the Phantom realises he can never make Christine love him and he lets her go.But to get to that point he had to try every avenue available to him, including manipulation, kidnap, extortion and murder, until he was left with literally nothing else to try. Christine would never be able to have a normal life with him. And he would never be able to have a normal life with her.Finding the love of his life is not going to change everything that happened to the Phantom, or fix the fucked up mind that lead him to take the paths he did. He daydreams of this. He idolises Christine and sees her as the cure to all of his suffering. But no one can fix you but yourself. If you go into a relationship thinking you can change or fix someone, nothing is ever going to go well.He would always be manipulative, volatile, violent, possessive and inherently abusive. We all want to save the Phantom. But Christine can't save him. And it's not her responsibility to do so.(hahahaha I wrote an essay,,,, anyway, I respect your opinion! But thoroughly disagree.)

Personally I think Erik is not supposed to be so, in a word, buff. Gerard Butler is a very well sculpted man, and even with the distorted face, he is still handsome (to an extent). Erik is supposed to be like a skeleton, and while it's impossible for them to cast someone skeleton-thin, they could have chose someone who would not appeal too much to the senses as Gerard Butler does. Erik is after all supposed to be hideous and thin, and Gerard Butler is neither of these things.

it is also noticed when Chiristine sings about "The tears I might have shed for your dark fate, grow cold and turn to tears of hate!" that wasn't acting either, you can love someone as much as you hate them. and when she sings about, "Pitiful creature of darkness, what kind of life have you known, God give me courage to show you, you are not alone!" summarizes exactly why the phantom is how he is. He doesn't know any better. She showed compassion. where needed. Sometimes monsters need love too.

Don't despair my friends, this being a tale means it can play out however you would like in your mind. If you wish it, Christine and the Phantom live happily together forever, it does not have to end badly. Apply this to all the stories you have read or seen and wished had ended differently, it really makes a difference in the long run.

5:45 "Order your fine horses now! Raise up your hands to the level of your eyes! Nothing can save you now... except perhaps... Christine." It could have a better ending to that phrase.

when David Shannon sang this at Her Majesty's Theatre, I wanted to go on stage and hug him.... I wanted to comfort him, and tell him that many people loves Erik, he's not alone....

Because a point is that she loves BOTH of them and is torn between them. Both are unhealthy relationships at the start--Raoul initially only sees Christine as the girl from his childhood, Erik sees her as his freedom. The difference is that Raoul had the capability to grow out of these unhealthy notions, whereas Erik did not due to his past. Which, yes, is tragic. As well, Erik KNEW she loved Raoul. It's why he tried to kill him. He fancied himself the protagonist of an opera. It's all he knew.

For anyone wondering about the hand at the level of you eye it is so that the phantom can't put a noose around your neck. The guy put his hand down and Phantom was able to do it to him.

That scene with Erik and that little monkey music box...that makes me tear up. And that's saying something. I didn't cry at any part of titanic, romeo and juliet, nothing. But that one scene is just so sad :'(
