March of 1982 I went to Phantom Ranch and stayed in a tent across Bright Angel Creek. Left the South Rim in a literal blizzard and walked out of it. By the time we reached the bridge at the bottom you could look back and see the blizzard still raging and it was 82 and sunny at the bottom. My Dad and I spent a week in the bottom of the Grand Canyon, 2 days at Phantom Ranch. That trip is still engraved in my heart. I saw colors in a sunrise from Plum Creek campground that I still can never reproduce. I heard a symphony on a record player several years later that almost brought tears to my eyes, when asked if I was OK i said , "yes". But this music reminds me of the Grand Canyon.......he showed me the album cover and it was "The Grand Canyon Suite" by Leonard Bernstein! Bernstein actually recorded "The Grand Canyon Suite" at Phantom Ranch. Absolutely unbelievable! A very special place that definitely etches itself into your soul. I love it there!

I know this is an old post but I am going with a group toward the end of june. How horrible is the heat going to be? I've heard its miserable. I'm use to 95 to 105 with high humidity but I've heard this is like 110 to 120. That's heat stroke weather

Fascinating and oh, so interesting. Was there in the late 1960s, but did not go to its depth to visit the Phantom Ranch. Shame on me for missing the experience of being at the heart of Grand Canyon.

Hope this comment brings back some memories / helps someone... So, in the winter of 1972-1973 my Dad and Stepmother and I hiked down the Bright Angel trail , spent the night at a camp area very near Phantom ranch. After a day or so, the weather turned very cold , and my Dad became concerned .... we found out it had dumped over a foot of snow at the rim area... So, we ended up getting a mule train ride out of the area , but after spending the night at Phantom ranch in one of the cabins. I recall there was a woman who was the " caretaker / host " of Phantom Ranch who cooked breakfast for us and maybe another couple that had spent the night..... I cannot remember her name, but she would have been in her 50s..... maybe close to 60 years old. She was a rugged woman, I recall. Anyway the mule ride was un eventful , there was a "mule skinner " named Ed ... I have a few photos from the event. I recall there was a swimming pool t Phantom Ranch that had not been functional in awhile. Pretty neat memory...which is coming up on 50 years ago now....

@@jasonbourne1518 Just curious, why did you feel the need to be a condescending jerk to a 12 year old, as if they chose their own mode of transport? Were you going through a hard time and taking it out on a kid on the internet, or is that just your MO? Perhaps you will someday be cursed with knees that age, fail you, and deprive you of the opportunity to hike on your own accord because perhaps it is you who doesn't deserve the GC.

On May 5th of 2023 , I walked into Phantom Ranch I was walking side to side very dehydrated I saw a empty table it was around 11 am as I was taking my Backpack off . I was approached by a man who helped me sit down and handed me a drink and said drink this it will help you I remember sitting down and he came back and asked if he could put a cold towel over my head. He asked me if I was staying overnight I said no that I was going out today he said I can ask the Rangers and see if they have anything available for you I said no I believe I can go with some rest and recovery. So I stayed around and ate rehydrating and as I was leaving it was around 12:30 a large crowd of people arrived and I could not say Thank you to this man who after watching this video I now know is Mr. Alfredo Conde , so Thank you SIR for your kindness you showed me I will always remember you as one who helped me at my time of need. I was able to hike out by taking plenty of breaks and was out by 7:45 that night.

1:27 I fished the mouth of that creek into the Colorado river using spinners for trout but had no luck so I switched to power bait and caught 5 nice sized carp. It took me by surprise! I was maybe 13 or 14. Left my dad and brother behind and did my own thing for hours and came back to the camp. No one was there so I went farther down the trail to the store and found them drinking lemonade. This was back in 03 or sometime close. The mouth of the creek was aimed more down river and the water was flowing stronger. Strange how it looks different but that’s erosion for ya.

A lot of people who have been there say the mules are being abused! They are in terrible condition dehydrated with wounds and not taken care of ! The park should be ashamed of using poor animals like that ! If you decide to hike down and then up use your own feer, do not torture poor mules who are already exhausted!
@tinabean7133 жыл бұрын
I've been in the canyon 3 times, never taken a mule ride, but been passed by them, including last year. They all looked in very good condition. Maybe it was just because I was desperately wishing for a ride on that climb back up, but I thought they looked gorgeous. The mule deer in the canyon, however, looked like there might not have been enough grass to go around. They didn't get the usual rain last year, so hoping this year's monsoon brings them plenty of leafy greens to munch.

You know it would be totally fantastic!!! If you didn't feel the need to play music so loud in the background that you can hardly hear the person taking. If I need background music when I'm trying to watch a video. I can turn my radio on. I don't need loud music when I'm watching a video. Like who wants to struggle to hear what a person is saying

A moment to thank all the Mules for their time and bodys ! Since the day you carried a pregnant woman into a barn stall to give birth to a baby boy ! Thanks to the Mule . The local humans.... NOT Makes a person think ! Wasn't it more like this . An unwed couple with a baby on the way looking for a room to have it in ? Not here they say ! In the barn for them ! The locals start talking 👄Let's just say she is a virgin and God did it . Hmmm NOT the man she came to town with ??? No wonder for 2000 year or I guess for 2022 years motels made it You had better sign in at the inn as a married couple . I wonder if the baby born in the manger to an unwed mother ever grew up with locals crucifieing him? You know I do believe . I believe the Mule belongs under the Christmas tree Nativity scene ! Maybe the three wise kings realized the injustice and brought goods ! Today it would be a settlement . No attention brought to our clean town ! Right! Same page now ! She is the VIRGIN Mary. Who did it ? GOD . We know the rest of the story of the story ! The baby the the unwed couple had ? Hated ✔ Tortured ✔ Murdered ✔ Ahh Those Humans 😠 Love the Mules 💘
