Remember John Dorey? He was an exchange student from Britain. He went to VCU for a while, then committed suicide. He was so miserable here in Richmond that he killed himself. Let's not forget Sara Prescott, who jumped off of Rhoads Hall in 2010 because this place sucks so bad. Then there were the two VCU students that killed themselves earlier this year. The suicide rate for Virginia has been increasing since 2003. But please, do tell me how great this place is again.

Do you even live in Richmond? Do you even live in Virginia at all? Suicide rates have generally been increasing somewhat in both Virginia and the nation overall. In 2011, Virginia had the 17th lowest (age-adjusted) suicide rate in the country: 12.5 deaths per 100,000 people. Virginia's rate was slightly higher than the national average rate of 12.3. Peer states North Carolina (12.3) and Tennessee (14.4) both had suicide rates higher than Virginia, while Maryland (9.1) had a markedly lower rate. New Jersey was the leading state, with just 7.4 age-adjusted deaths per 100,000 people due to suicide. Suicide is not Richmond centric. I think a majority of people realize that suicide isn't about location more so a host of other factors: History of mental disorder, particularly depression History of alcohol and substance abuse Family history of suicide Family history of child maltreatment Feelings of hopelessness Impulsive or aggressive tendencies Barriers to accessing mental health treatment Loss (relational, social, work, or financial) Physical illness Easy access to lethal methods Unwillingness to seek help because of the stigma attached to suicidal thoughts or mental health and substance abuse disorders Cultural and religious beliefs -- for instance, the belief that suicide is a noble resolution of a personal dilemma Local epidemics of suicide Isolation, a feeling of being cut off from other people Previous suicide attempt(s) It's heartbreaking that those individuals took their lives. It was a decision they made for themselves. The city didn't make that decision for them nor did the citizens who lived there. We don't always see the signs of a potential suicide, but it should always be our duty to help someone if their in need. The country itself is having a difficult time economically and socially. It's times like this that community spirit such as RVA Happy is most important. So stop being an troll! Be a social changer versus a negative grump sourpuss!
