An overview of the Iron/Fe3C phase diagram and then an explanation of how a final microstructure that consists of 21% proeuctectoid Fe3C (cementite) and 79% pearlite (ferrite + cementite in a fine microstructure) is formed. The lever rule is applied, and the compositions of each phase are explained. This is for an Introduction to Materials Science, college level course. The alloy composition for this problem is 2 weight percent carbon.
