Great video! Spot on! Many undergrads think that the natural step after a BSc/MSc is a PhD. Once they start the PhD they realise that they have no interest in it. In the end, they have wasted their time, money and finally drop out empty-handed. Do a PhD ONLY if you are interested in research and if you love the thrill of discovering something new.

You don't need to go deeper, simply if you are an introvert and have a good knowledge in the context (prior to start the PhD), don't have an extreme greed for money, value principles/knowledge/education/self satisfaction than material wealth, deep thinker, have a good analysis skills based on facts (not emotions), self disciplined, motivated, consistent, a good reader and a listener, feels that you have a greater potential to be an expert in the field and able to visualise the rough outcome/steps of the PhD research that you are going to begin, then go ahead and do it. If you don't have any of the above, reevaluate the decision.

This is depending person to person. If you are doing the relevant subject area with such an enthusiasm, you are obviously in a great path by choosing to do a PHD. My sister just completing her PHD in this month from Colombo university. I'm 19 & very passionate and enthusiastic about it and she's such a great role model for me and I'm really really proud of her. What I want to say for everyone who's watching this video, DO A PHD IF YOU ARE REALLY PASSIONATE AND ENTHUSIASTIC ABOUT IT AND RELEVANT SUBJECT. IF YOU HAVE ENTHUSIASM YOU ARE GONNA ACHIEVE THE SUCCESS YOU WANT, DON'T STOP! YOU'LL ARE CAPABLE TO DO IT! ALL THE BEST FOR YOUR HIGHER STUDIES..

PhD is about the journey not the destination or the certificate you get at the end. The qualities like experiences, struggles, skills, critical thinking, curiosity, connecting dots, seeing the bigger picture, courage you gain during this journey makes you better scholar in the future. PhD success does not always correlates to the undergraduate GPA. If you are doing a PhD like the way you are completing a bachelors degree, you cannot be an independent researcher.
When private universities invade the higher education, when you have to pay for your higher education #2 is no longer valid. It’s happening in countries like USA. Soon it will reach SL.

There are non-thesis masters to further learn, if you like learning. If you don't like research, then you can do a non-thesis masters. It's pretty good qualification in the US to have a masters. There are students in my class in their 30s 40s working in well reputed companies but still trying to get a masters because it's a good push to go up in the corporate ladder.

From that point some can get a wrong idea And it's better upload this video after u complete ur Phd. I also think its better, do a phd if u have a strong will to research and to do something different. Personally me, i dont have even any degree and also i'm not hoping to do one. This depends on the country and the field. In US, there is a hudge diffefence in salaries for a MSc jobs and PhD jobs. But u r correct to say that PhD students are underpaid. But once they get into a job they can earn a lot. For a senior scientist job, the salary would b around 120k per year at the entry. so pls dont get discouraged if u do a PhD in a scientific field. Specially in a good country. But i agree with u, it is a waste of time to do a PhD in none job oriented field and a country

I had absolutely no interest in pursuing higher studies and got straight into the industry after my Bachelors from Faculty of Engineering - UOP. But with my husband being in USA doing his PhD, I had no option but to try to apply there for higher studies. Didn't like it AT ALL but I wanted to stay with him, so I applied, got an assistantship, went there and still in the program. I feel pretty amazing now though, and I have no regrets at all. So just saying, sometimes it would do wonders even for someone who might not like the idea of pursuing higher studies in the first place.

I assume your opinion is based on your personnel experience, which is relative to your field of study, funding status, objectives of your study, your level of facing challenges, the ability of logical thinking, capacity to survive, your passion, end goal of doing a PhD, your PhD advisor, the institute where you do a PhD, your team members and many more things. So, none of us are in a position to advise others not to do a PhD based on our personnel experience. PhD is something anyone can try to do if they have a passion and the commitment. Like anything else in the life, it comes with many challenges related to the factors I mentioned above. Once you get a PhD you have lots of career paths. It can be a paper qualification, to get promoted or it can be qualification to start a new career, based on your expertise. People should wisely choose their PhD advisors, and the institutes because, an advisor can make your life a hell. If a person is organized, curious, creative, think logically, commit for long hours of continues work, lots of reading, etc, that helps a lot when you do a PhD. Of course, we have to work hard to get a good outcome, and sometimes you feel like nothing works the way you want during your PhD time. But, if you think about other careers, it is the same for everything else. Salary of a PhD depends on your field of study, and your end goal career. For example, a person who has a PhD in a biology related field can stay as a scientist, join academia, or chose to become a analyst, regulatory specialist, scientific writer, editor, program manager etc where each one has different salary ranges. There is a whole big world out there if you choose it wisely. When you have a MD, PhD together, it is one of the highest paid areas in developed countries. Obviously, it is not easy, and it is a very long way to go. You may be sitting in a lab pulling your hair, without any vacations, while your non PhD friends are earning a 6 figure salary. But you have never been in their shoes, so you do not know what they are going through in their careers. My advice is, if you have your end goal locked, just try and go for it. I have seen PhDs just working for salary, and some work for passion, and some have very good life balance, and some people hate it. And I myself did all of these things at different stages of becoming a PhD and during my life after the PhD. Life keeps changing, so is our careers, our salaries, our passions, our feelings, so DO NOT give up without trying if you really want to do it.
@IQLabs4 жыл бұрын
I welcome your comment. I will bring out this line: "So, none of us are in a position to advise others not to do a PhD based on our personnel experience" - this same argument can be used against what you are trying to say as well. In that sense, you are not in a position to advise others to do a PhD based on your personal experience. Anyway, as I have clearly stated in the video, do not pursue a PhD for these reasons because there is no guarantee of those outcomes. It's very subjective, and depends on the field (which I have stated with certain examples) Cheers!
@WW_004 жыл бұрын
@@IQLabs I only said NOT to give up. I just gave the general perspective of a PhD. People try to achieve things for many different reasons, a job, a salary, a status, passion etc based on their priorities. You are still very young in this race, just a PhD student. I have seen probably 20 more years than you. You will realize later in your life, PhD is just one of the many different things in your life. It is not rocket science, you just need will power and commitment. People can decide why they want to do a PhD, it can be for any reason. And if they are smart they will find their way. So, we should not discourage anyone who wants do something. Just provide the facts, and let people decide what they want to do. Yes, it is very subjective, but your vedio title gives the wrong idea. And you said in your vedio (ignore if I misundrstood), you can not go through the route, BSc, MSc, PhD, job, well trust me thats the exact route I came through. And many of my collegues here too. Between PhD and a job I had a post-doc. But it can be different for different fields. PhD is not always a maze either, then that is the fault of the advisor. Because, most of the people lose focus when they plan a research study. I have seen it with many investigators, very complicated thinking, and never achieves the goal of the study, because they get lost by trying to do everything. Keep doing the good work, sharing your experience, and don't advise anyone what to do. Because, if someone is thinking about a PhD, right there that person is already someone. Good luck with your studies, make all of us proud.

@@shamikaweerasinghegoogle your point is not wrong or right. It depends on where you work. I completed my degree when I was 24, then I completed my MBA in 28 all in Malaysia. Now I am 32 this year, I handle all International marketing and operations for India and Sri lanka for my Malaysian Company. In perspective of culture in Sri Lanka, a degree is not recognized until you have 5 to 6 years of experience. But in other countries some gives recognition to the education and also the skill set that you have. So you can't advice to wait for few years and do your PhD or MBA, you can do PhD slowly while you work. So you can't assume to input or inject srilankan mentality of education into others. I know people who have started their PhD in when they were 25 itself and and furthermore, some are given jobs around 60k worth in Malaysia for teaching assistant post only while they are doing PhD, once they are done with PhD, the salary scale above 700000lkr.
