This grandma was born, raised in a difficult and turbulent time in Hmong women history. She lived and accepted the life that she was dealt with. We don’t wear her shoes and shouldn’t judge her and the choices she made. We Hmong women who are born or raised here in America don’t understand, have not gone through any of the struggles and hardships this grandma and countless women of her time went through. I’m just glad I was raised here and brought up my children differently and equally regardless of gender. Living here in America being single is no big deal because we are educated, work and pay our own bills. Having a husband has different meanings back then but not in todays time: Equal value and pull your own weight.

I'm happy that you and your siblings were reunited and can support one another. This grandma's life story only applies to life from her generation. Her priority was to not starve and survive in the Hmoob community. She is content.

Trauma runs deep in the Hmong community. Hopefully her kids don't follow their dad's footsteps. I understand the mom's purpose but I'm not a fan of my husband marrying a 2nd wife. My relationship ends the minute I know he's cheating. Sorry not sorry and not willing to set that example for my children to learn and continue the cycle.

To have a husband in order to be worth in the Hmoob communities is an old thinking that was implanted by the OGs from long long time again. In my life the women are the strongest than all of the men because they are ones who survived and lived years after years their husbands died!! Husbands are there to be useless and wanting to be serve by us wives and women. Have them are just like having another child to take care for that is what I see in my life and other Hmoob families.

That having his name makes her whole and important. No honey you are the one that make his name and you are the reason he has a name.
