Brilliant video! Just one question though... Does the bond angle around oxygen in phenol change when the lone pair on oxygen is delocalized into the aromatic ring?

Why is there 3 br2 for phenols can it not stay as br2 and only hv 2 br on the phenol
@spiralx6249 Жыл бұрын
The assumption here is that excess bromine is used.

will we need to draw the mechanism for the reaction of phenol , e.g you said that br2 with phenol is electrophilic sub so do we need to draw it out ?

what if you used only 1br2 and not 3br2 would you still get a white precipitate ? Also is it always the case that you get three substitutions when you reacts bromine and phenol like surely if you only reacted 1br2 you would only produce bromophenol
@MaChemGuy5 жыл бұрын
Ahmad Ghaffar You are correct in what you say, assumption is that excess bromine is reacted hence the tri-substitution
@ahmadghaffar67585 жыл бұрын
MaChemGuy would you still get a precipitate if you used 1br2? And can you please clarify for exams what we are meant to do ..ie: do we always assume that excess br2 is used because normally they just say “when bromine reacts with phenol” so from that how are we meant to know If it’s excess br2 or not ..the same thing applies for phenyl amine like is it sways the case that excess br2 is used and we get tru substitution
@ahmadghaffar67585 жыл бұрын
MaChemGuy another thing sir ..can benzene decolorise bromine when a halogen carries is used ?
@ahmadghaffar67585 жыл бұрын
MaChemGuy and lastly , when a phenol reacts with Nitric acid why do we get two isomers ? Shouldn’t the same idea apply like it does for bromine that you get three substitution. If you use the idea of isomers than is it right to say that when bromine reacts with phenol , you also get 2 isomers
@spiralx6249 Жыл бұрын
@@ahmadghaffar6758 - it is not that the benzene decolourises the bromine. The bromine becomes a bromide ion in the reaction, then attaching to the ring. In that reactive process and change, it loses the red colour.
