In this video we cover,
Phenol, also known as carbolic acid, is an aromatic organic compound. Pure phenol is a white crystalline solid that is volatile. It is mildly acidic and requires careful handling due to its propensity to cause chemical burns. Although similar to alcohols, phenols have unique distinguishing properties.
Phenol is a weak acid that is more acidic than alcohols:
Acidity
Phenol is weakly acidic in aqueous solutions, lowering the pH. It is acidic enough to react with sodium metal, producing hydrogen gas.
Explanation
Phenol's acidity comes from its ability to lose a hydrogen ion, forming phenoxide ions. The phenoxide ion is stabilized by resonance, and the negative charge on the oxygen atom is delocalized around the ring.
Comparison to alcohols
Phenol is about a million times more acidic than alcohols with similar properties.
Resonance in phenol is the delocalization of the electron pair in the p-orbital of the atom. This phenomenon contributes to the stability and reactivity of phenol.
