I really wish VIA would come back strong with a good low cost, but high performance APU style chip to give AMD, and Intel some competition, while giving good support to the Linux community with open drivers baked into kernel updates. From what I've read they are starting to do some stuff in China, so at least that's something.

Those Phenom's memory controller stock max support is DDR3 1333 Mhz. 1600 will work but it's technically an overclock setting. I ran an OC'ed Phenom 955 for years, up until last year in my main gaming rig. The 9x5 4-core CPUs can still do modern gaming in many cases but it's starting to show its age.
@Rapanui56 жыл бұрын
I have a Phenom II X2 555 which I brought in 2011 and I'm STILL using as my main computer (well, not enought money to buy another one). with 8 gb of ram, I did upgraded to a 120 gb ssd and last year I managed to save enought to change my old radeon 6790 for a radeon RX580. I unlocked a third core (there is a fourth one but that one it's faulty) and overclocked it to 4,1 ghz. I kept the overclock since 2013. I'm studying 3d modelling and animation and this processor holds pretty well for that. In Z-brush I can use 15 millons of polygons without problems. I have been playing Wolfestein the new order with max settings (altought there are some weird artifacts, for instance when I turn around quickly some textures seems to load in front of me). Also I play World of Tanks and World of Warships with max settings. The main hinder I encountered with this processor was trying to use Arnold render under 3ds max. Arnold requieres SSE4.1 instructions which this processor lacks. I managed to use a software emulator of SSE 4.1 and 4.2, however that makes the whole thing 8 times slower. If anyone wonders why I brought the RX580 its because my 6790 was failing and also I wanted to use radeon pro render which can use the GPU for rendering (also the CPU). I can say that the RX580 it's 22 times faster than the CPU when I render the same scene.
@TheEternalUniverse6 жыл бұрын
If you are doing any sort of rendering, you really want to pick up any other processor. These phenoms are incredibly slow at 3d modelling. I tried to set up an old 965 X4 overclocked to 4ghz as a render node but it was just so slow at it even compared to modern 25w cpu's that it was not worth the electricity bill.
@Rapanui56 жыл бұрын
@@TheEternalUniverse Actually I don't have money for that. Also, it annoyes me alot that I have to spend at least 500€ in something which would be better than my current setup (because for such investment to make any sense the new cpu + motherboard + 16 gb of DDR4 ram) should be at least twice as fast. In the school were I'm studying they are using Macs (I'm not sure which model) which has a 4 core processor (not sure if it's a 4 true one or 2 + 2 hyperthreading). I know they are I5's and 8 gb of ram. These computers are only marginally faster than mine in rendering (using Mental ray). Thats why I invested in an RX580 for use it with Radeon pro render (I have yet to find another render engine which uses an Ati GPU, Octane doesn't)
@TheEternalUniverse6 жыл бұрын
@@Rapanui5 From my experience, when I got an AMD ryzen 5 1600 I tried to retire my x4 965 as a render node and i found it was around 3-6 times as slow as the ryzen at rendering, depending on whether certain features were used or not such as subsurface scatter.

@TheEternalUniverse6 жыл бұрын
@@elnian1266 Sure. How well yours will overclock is dependant on the chip, this is known as the "sillicon lottery", I happen to have a very good one so my voltages are low to maintain the overclock but yours may differ. 20x on the cpu multiplier to give 4ghz. 1.375v on vCore. Depending on how good your chip is you might have to push this up a bit more to get it stable. You can safely go to 1.45v without worry. I forget the multiplier on the HyperTransport, but I know it ran at 2200mhz. This is well worth doing and will increase the cpu's effective speed more than the cpu OC, but the 970 chipset runs extreamly hot even without OC so will need a fan pointing at it.

Unless we are talking about some low end laptop/netbook AMD APU's they have rarely failed to impress me over the years when looking at their cost to performance ratios, and longevity of the platforms the CPU are on. AMD overall in my eyes truly is the value king for both old school, and modern builds. For a good example as an early Christmas gift my mother wanted to get me something for fixing her lawnmower, and AC unit this year, so I went on eBay, and found a Lenovo Thinkpad X140e for $80 USD, upgraded the ram to 8GB of DDR3L slapped Linux Mint 19 Mate on it, and have even been able to run a decent number of games via STEAM at 720p on it with the AMD A4-5000 APU, and I power though daily use office work, KZbin, etc.. with ease. my only issues thus far have been VGA/HDMI out to an external monitor, but that's a Linux display driver issue I hope gets resolved quickly in the new Kernel driver updates.

This real dual core model runs a bit faster, at 3.6 GHz, and while lacking the 6 megabytes L3 cache of the Phenom, boasts twice the L2 cache, with 2 * 1 MB. This increase of L2 cache partially compensates the lack of L3 cache, which in the Phenom architecture, is unfortunately very slow and quite inefficient. Speaking of efficiency, the humble Athlon II X2 has much lower power consumption : ~50W vs ~70W (measured, not the official TDP) At identical frequency, the Athlon has about 95 % the performance of the Phenom II X2, which is very good. So the Athlon II X2 is a real bargain. The only real disadvantage is the lack of an unlocked multiplier for a quick and easy overclocking.

Fair comment. I have been using a 260 for the past 8 years. OC is possible only by increasing base clock (easy on my Asus AM3 board).

Being firmly in the Intel camp back in the day, I never really paid much attention to these AMD processors, and I was wondering how this would compare to competing Intel processors. But looking at the lists of processors around at the time, I'm not really sure what would've been competing with it. Intel didn't really have any highly-clocked dual core parts, their dual core i3s were all lower-clocked, whereas their higher-clocked i5 and i7 processors were all quad core. And I have no idea what would've been competing on price. Also a quick update on the Q9550 I mentioned in the comments on your previous 775 video, the motherboard boots fine with a P4 520, and the BIOS looks up to date, so I guess there's a problem with the chip. Looking at the prices on ebay and aliexpress, not sure what'd be the best value alternative, or if it's even worth trying to resurrect this system (it allegedly has a windows 10 license activated for it).

I hope you know that XP isn't support TRIM on SSDs and the life on the SSD with XP installed is more short than others (SSD + Win7, 8, 10)
@Blzut36 жыл бұрын
With modern SSDs TRIM support dosen't matter nearly as much as it used to. Pretty much all, if not all, drive have enough over-provisioning that outside of benchmarks specifically testing for it you shouldn't notice slowdown. The over provisioning allow wear leveling/garbage collection to work pretty much as well as it would with TRIM support. SSDs are growing in popularity in data centers and for the most part TRIM is not used there. This isn't to say that having TRIM support wouldn't be more optimal, but it's not he end of the world if it doesn't exist. Basically these days you can look at the total TB written endurance rating and apply it to any work load. Given that retro machines aren't used 24/7 I don't think there's anything to worry about using an SSD for a retro system. Note that none of this necessarily applies to CF or SD cards, but if one is using those they're probably doing so mostly for the ease of imaging anyway. That said I do believe Windows XP has a background process that's supposed to optimize the location of files to speed things up. I don't know much about it but if one were to use an SSD with XP for more than just quick benchmarking it would probably be worthwhile to look into SSD optimization guides to turn off features that do nothing when used on an SSD.
@PainterVierax6 жыл бұрын
TRIM is used in datacenters, it's just that Linux supports command to enable TRIM and not running it on the fly. So you just put a cronjob with a fitrim script to avoid slowing the service during high-demand hours. Another problem using XP is security concern : you'd better use an updated Linux desktop with games running on Wine.
@Blzut36 жыл бұрын
@@PainterVierax hardware RAID controllers don't pass through TRIM. Some might be able to do it in RIAD 0/1/10, but I don't think I've seen any controller support TRIM on RAID 5/6. I can tell you that TRIM is not enabled on the SSDs that I've deployed at work and they've operated a database workload 24/7 for 3 years with very low failure rate.

Were I work fileservers just use software RAID to avoid downtimes and facilitate migrations.
@armorgeddon5 жыл бұрын
On XP you just need to turn of that optimization Bizut3 already mentioned plus the automatic defragmentation. It also helps to manually create the partition for XP before installing the OS because the XP installer doesn't align partitions correctly. I used my very first SSD, Intel X25-M 80 GB I bought in 2010 in Windows XP before upgrading to Windows 7 and Linux. That SSD is still running strong with 5 reallocated sectors used daily in my HTPC. I only bought Intel SSDs until 2011 and Crucial SSDs after that for myself and customers. No SSD retired so far. Great value despite the high prices in the beginning.
