I have just been listening to the the brand new Analogue Productions Atlantic 75 series issue of the Stone Temple Pilots' 1991 debut album Core. This absolutely superb new Ryan K. Smith all-analogue cut is presented on 2x45rpm LPs pressed at QRP - Quality Record Pressings.
I purchased my copy of Core direct from Acoustic Sounds: store.acoustic...

Dave, great thorough review with lots of personal context around it. I’m a little younger than you, so this was a seminal album for me when it came out. Actually, it should’ve been, but Plush was so overplayed, that I tried to ignore it. I did see them live on the PURPLE tour in South Florida, but I wasn’t a big fan until years after their prime. I rediscovered the true magic of CORE at a time when I felt like the only person in the world still listening to it. It’s truly an incredible rock album and, undoubtedly, my favorite STP album. I’m not ever ordering AP’s reissue of PURPLE. I just don’t care about it, although it does have some great 90s songs on it. CORE is something else. I got one of the numbered copies of this A75 reissue and it has definitely never sounded better. There really is nothing quite like the music coming from first half of the 90s on the West Coast of the US. Indelible moment in time. Thanks for the thoughtful review.

I received my copy wasn’t going to get this album until I saw Your video I have the mini deluxe box set the AP 75th Atlantic definitely is the best version can’t wait for Purple which I preordered to me the next 3 albums from STP are the best they start pull away from the grunge sound which is obvious on this record, Weilands vocals only get better too as he changes styles every album a different direction very underrated singer seen them live many times and with Slash and Duff in Velvet Revolver always gave what you came for live. We all expected how it turned out unfortunately for Scott and his family. Look forward to those reviews

Amazing! I found the same exact thing. Stunning. Wait till purple comes along! You will have to get that one too! You need a Temple Of the Dog OG pressing from Brazilian if you like Pearl Jam 👍🏻 I am in Seattle it’s not always dark and dreary here. We have the best summers anywhere on the planet. It’s probably a lot like London here. The best Nirvana Nevermind cut I think is the Bernie G cut that was I think pressed at Pallas. It changed my mind on the production quality of the Nevermind. I think this Bernie cut is maybe not too hard to find.

Thanks for the tip. I’ll look out for the BG cut Nevermind. I do have Temple of the Dog on vinyl, an early copy, but if my memory is correct it’s not an original.

Same boat here minus the grunge. Was into Velvet Revolver for a while, so familiar with Scott Wieland. This was my first STP and I absolutely love it. Haven't got past side 1, though, played at least 4 - 5 times, lol.

Thanks Dave. STP’s 2nd album Purple and 3rd album Tiny Music are the bands sweet spot. Those two albums are markedly different from Core and more representative of their sound imo. Not sure if Tiny Music was recorded to tape or not, but I would love to see that album added to the 75 series, if it was recorded to tape.

@@KRay-km8hh FWIW, I did check out the recent Deluxe release, the one with the remastered Grundman vinyl (likely digital) and the 3 CDs. Damn expensive! BUT... I must admit the vinyl sounded pretty damn good! I didn't really need the expensive Deluxe version and certainly not the CDs, but I hadn't realized that they have later released the vinyl separately on the first two albums. So, I sent it back to Amazon and I'm waiting for the vinyl only release. Seriously... even though likely digital, still, Bernie's mastering or whatever sounded F'n amazing and was FULLY crankable! Again, FWIW...

Hello Mr. Dave! Heh, for me what I would say about what I find engaging about 'Grunge' and the like is the 'Moodiness' of the sound. Almost everything is done in minor keys. So, since I like moody things, albums, movies, art, etc., that is what I would single out about this 'Genre' that I very much like (Alice In Chains is *SO* F'n phenomenal, it like they are even at another level entirely - thus my deep appreciation for your getting me to reconsider (and buy) the 2-LP Yellow pressing that you have, *DEEPLY* indebted mate! 😁) BTW, just the other day, I took out Pearl Jam's Vs., I have a 1st US pressing. Let me tell you, the sound quality blew my frigg'n *PANTS* off! *WOW!* I would most humbly suggest that you might wish to reconsider that one my friend... But yeah, this 2-LP Atlantic 75 of Core is mind blowinging fantastic! And YES! You do indeed want to keep turning it up! And you DO! 😀 Can't bloody wait for the Atlantic 75 2-45 of Purple. Now, with Nirvana, yes I like them but compared to all the other ones for me personally they are probably my least favourite. The mood and tone on those, although I feel the songwriting is quite good, is a tad 'samey' (BTW, I bet you don't have the 1st US pressing of Nevermind, do you...? Heh heh... 😁 Can't take any credit for it, like many others I simply bought it when it came out) BTW, if you haven't heard or checked out another Grunge band that wasn't as well known, you really should check out the Screaming Trees. Most especially the album Uncle Anesthesia, one of my all time favourites and the most Bad@ss cover art I've seen. They have more of a softer, Psychedelic undertone which I REALLY like. Also, his voice is not as Grungy, it is more Psychedelic and moody.

Haha! You're the second to recommend that I revisit 'vs.', so I will certainly have to do so...My Nevermind isn't an original US, but I do now need to find a better (the best) copy of that album that I can find. I'll also have to check out the Screaming Trees: to be honest I've never heard them.

@@DaveDenyer Ah, there's your reply! 😁 Good to hear back from you, thanks! Yes, do check out Uncle Anesthesia and see what you think. Like I mentioned, it is more the mood and Psychedelic vibe of his voice and the compositions that I really like. Kind of like Grunge/Psychedelic. Don't know if it will be your thing...

In your last video, you had already sold me on [Atlantic 75] David Crosby - If I Could Only Remember My Name to fill in a gap in my collection. However, as much as a I appreciate the music that came out of the late 60s / early 70s California scene, I did not "live" it. Grunge however I DID live. I don't wade into the debate about whether STP is grunge or not; they are certainly grunge-adjacent ;)...but a different part of the heavy alt-music scene at the time that included RHCP - Blood Sugar Sex Magic and Rage Against the Machine's self-titled...in terms of exciting and defining the era. The main difference a I see it is that Weiland really developed into his own thing; both in vocal uniqueness on subsequent albums and as a captivating live performer. The 2nd major difference between STP's southern California sound versus Seattle-grunge is that underneath it all, STP often employed jazz chords and progressions. Time to trade in some of my records to help finance picking this one up (though I already own a copy..which I can sell afterwards). I caught all the grunge bands that came through town, including the lesser known 2nd or third tier grunge bands that opened or toured on their own. I really see it as MY time; my youthful heyday. I was 21 years old when Badmotorfinger came out and I caught the tour in a mid-size club live. FWIW, it was the only time I actually stage-dived; so into the music I was. Soundgarden is my favorite of the big 4 and I support your suggestion that Badmotorfinger (my fave SG album) gets the Atlantic 75 treatment (though I fear they would lean towards the appeal of Superunknown over Badmotorfinger). Lastly, don't sell Pearl Jam's second album short. I recently finally picked up the the 2LP 45rpm of Vs., and while it's probably not "Atlantic 75 " good. it's still very good and made me excited to hear it again. Cheers!

If i member correctly the CD version of Core sound pretty punchy. Badmotorfinger is my favourite Soundgarden album i need the best sounding version of that on wax for sure. This era is my bread n butter, a bunch of us would get together almost every weekend and watch PJ Unplugged or Alice in chains or STP and have a few beverages and a big sing along. Great times

I’m surprised you don’t like VS by Pearl Jam. That’s a really great album and there is currently a very good recent 45rpm reissue out there that’s very highly regarded. Maybe you should revisit that as I think it’s quite close to Ten on quality. Also, it’s way better than the current album. But yes, I bought Core and love it. To be honest, I’m looking forward to Purple more though as that has I think big potential to sound great, especially compared to many of the rather average pressings out there. I do think we need more 90’s rock reissued like this…Soundgarden especially comes to mind.

Hi Charles, to be honest I've never had a copy of vs on vinyl but you're right, it has some great songs. I'll look into that 45rpm reissue... That and Bad Motor Finger, and a better Nevermind are currently top of my list...

I’m not really into the grunge stuff of the Seattle scene of the 90s Watching your review of the STP Core record it came across that you were more impressed by the sound quality than the music itself!! Just an observation!

I definitely like the music, I've had STP earworms for the passed two days, since listening to this. But whilst it's not my favourite 'grunge' record, (STP are not my favourite band of that era), there's no question that the sound is utterly phenomenal.
