I used to teach this poem of Angelou's in my Middle School classes, usually in the month of March. My gals would recite it. One pretty, young, often-troubled black student decided to memorize it and "performed' it brilliantly on stage at a school talent show. She WAS Phenomenal. It was a positive experience in a year more often marked by being disciplined in school and often "put down." I wish I knew where she is now. I bet she is a Phenomenal Woman these days.

I'm just glad and relieved Atlantic Records was unable to "woo" Ruthie to their label back in the day because they would've ended up turning her into a hot commercial mess otherwise, lol! Props to you Blue Corn folks for allowing her to establish one of the finest American music legacies in recent memory on her own terms instead. Think I discovered Ruthie via one of Amazon's "Listmania" recommendations more than a decade ago and decided to check out her music for myself. Six albums later, have to say she has a prominent spot in my ever-growing CD collection:::wink:::wink:::"phenomenal" artist indeed... ;-)

I've seen Ruthie Foster twice in concert. She's fabulous. One was at the International Guitar Night...the first time I heard of her and fell in love with her music that night. Then I had the pleasure of seeing her at a very small venue on Lopez Island, WA where she was performing for a local school to promote the Arts in Schools. That night she had a concert for the public. She was so personable and friendly and so much fun!
