Once you have listened to "In The Air Tonight" for the first time it becomes a legal requirement to play the air drums every time you hear that drum solo - no matter where you are at the time, and if you listen to the song from the beginning it is also a legal requirement that you stop and wait in anticipation for that drum solo.

@@jacquesm6847 Actually when it came out in the 80s, wasn't really paying attention as it was on the radio in the laundromat or something, so got used to hearing it as background music all these years. But, for the young folk to step back and play it as astonishing, opened my eyes for sure. Now, I'm going to feel more 'alive' when hearing it. I saw this guy play live a good few years ago and he’s awesome, absolutely brilliant. We brits are very proud of him. The song is about a very bad divorce from his American wife, she messed him up big time. Sadly now he’s suffering ill health due to drumming for so many years and his son now plays drums for him, he still sings though. Great album to listen to is when he was lead singer of Genesis is “And then there were three” He’s also a lovely man. One of the best drummers in the world as well as being able to play many other instruments too

Phil Collins started his career as a child actor in the West End musical Oliver. He ended up as the drummer for the group Genesis and when Peter Gabriel left the group he took over as the vocalist too, (30+ years singing and drumming together means he knows how to do both without either interfering with the other). When he also acted in movies, this may explain how he is able to inject emotions into both his music and his on stage performances. As a drummer he is recognised as one of the greats, it's not all about frenetic, complex, drum solos, but the control, the solid holding of the rhythm and pace as well as not over playing and drowning out the rest of the band. By the time of this performance he had mastered his crafts, honed them, and could display them to the audiences. He also worked with, and could call on other great musicians (Leland Sklar on bass, Chester Thompson as drummer until he "picks up the sticks") who were happy to work with ans collaborate with him. He has a lot of great music to his name, a lot of great performances behind him, but this one, of all those I have seen, is my favourite. Oh, and the start is not a long intro but the build up to a classic master performance.

Phil started out in 1970 as the drummer for Genesis, becoming the lead singer in 1976. He continued with Genesis until the mid nineties. Then joined them for a tour in 2007 and is now on tour with them again. During that time his solo career started in 1981. You should react to more Genesis. They were a great live band. Phil's wife left him when he was on tour with Genesis in the U.S. in the late 70's. This song really sums up the snher for his wife and her new partner. A no 1 hit in 80/81. So uncommercial and different but had so much meaning for so many. The fact that a man expressed this rare.emotion in recognition of the facets involved in separation was rare at the time. He had 2 children from this marriage which made it all that much harder.

Phil Collins, Actor, Producer,Director,Singer,Songwriter, and a very accomplished musician who can play a hell of a lot more than just drums. There is a very little known TV show that changed so much called Miami Vice. And yes he has a sense of humor. He even once sang "I can't dance, I can't sing" . With Genesis he and the rest of the group had hit after hit. Then his solo career took off. Mike Rutherford also had a solo career. I remember when Genesis first hit the scene. They became a super group in no time. Phil Collins has also sung for Disney and many other TV shows and movies. I am always surprised when I see someone who has never heard of Genesis or Phil Collins.. It baffles me because of how much they did worldwide.. This song even after all these years still reaches deep inside like few others can. I have actually received speeding tickets in my cars when this song comes on. Back when we use to have real audio equipment ( not the crap they sell today) when those drums kick in ...The wow factor just never goes away. I laughed at another channel where they heard this for the first time and were breaking down his vocals . Basically to say how he could have changed it. Well I am here to say Phil Collins is beyond successful. He doesn't need pointers. I am glad you finally have heard this. Listen to the album version sometime. The drums are even more amazing. Btw, this was most certainly one of the best reactions I have ever witnessed. Thank you.

I have played this song hundreds of times and seen at least 60 people hear this for the first time on KZbin. The response every time is universally the same; the bobbing of the head the face one makes when one tastes something very bitter. And for the majority of people, respond the same way every time they hear it. Here is Mr. Collins, He does not look like a rock star. just a plain everyday Joe. He doesn't technically have a great voice. But WHAT HE DOES HAVE is pure raw emotion. He honestly pours his soul into singing this song. Which makes him a GREAT singer. The chords are almost religious sounding. Also, check out the vocal group 'Naturally 7'do this with a 50-piece orchestral. They do an incredible job. They create an additional vocal part, which fits in and enhances the quality of the song. Their version is an 'interpretation; of the song, not a 'cover' Phil mentioned in an interview, he was going thru a painful divorce when he wrote this. so that's where the deep emotion comes from. The different musical devices the band uses, are expertly crafted to manipulate the emotions of the listener. He cleverly makes the lyrics obtuse enough, so they can be interpreted differently. This will always be one of a handful of the most powerful songs I have ever heard. When a song can make the hairs on your neck or arms raise straight out. you know it is hitting you on a primal leve

I watched Tulsa King last evening Phil Collins “In the air tonight” played during a scene in the show. Perfect it was. Phil’s health has declined in recent years. He can no longer play the drums. He is officially retired. He has one hell of a music catalog!

Imagine a warm summer night, rolling down the road with your high school friends. Car windows open, summer breeze blowing. The smell of fresh cut grass, and summer sounds. Slipping into the night, just relaxed and chilling. Then this song comes on the radio. Everyone air drumming and singing at the top of their lungs. Yeah. That was how it was when this song came out. Life was just too cool.

Your reaction is pure ecstatic. Only Phil Collins could pull something like this off and he did it with class and drama. Collins is very talented, wrote for Disney, did great things with Genius, and is still going strong on his own. You listen to his work or any other's work from that time period and you understand the great pieces took a lot of talent to write, produce and perform. Great stuff.

His mouth when the drums come in.... love it! Too live when this song dropped. Your generation has no idea what great music is but you are learning. Nice!

If no one mentioned this, bands will often do a long intro to get people hyped. Also, I loved your reaction esp to Phil on drums. Excellent song! Thanks

I find it so hard to believe that so many people have not heard this song.....OMG...truely tho, wait until you hear the drums...hair standing up on your arm moment....and I remember when this song first came out....no one seems to play music like this any longer. For those of you who don't know Phil was the drummer for Genesis when the lead singer quit and he was the only one left who could sing at all....so last minute the asked him to sing at the next conert. He thought he was shite but he was awesome....so so good...love this man and his music

LOL... Again, I enjoy seeing the 1st time reactions of those who've been deprived of some great music!! When you reach ICON STATUS, such as Phil Collins has, you're definitely allowed to make the INTRO of a GREAT SONG like this as LONG AS YOU'D LIKE!! & he doesn't disappoint!!😁😉🥰

Phil Collins played this in LONDON for Live Aid in 1986 then flew supersonic on Concorde to JFK and took a chopper to Philadelphia to perform it again there the same day. To hear some of Phil's best pop work on drums, I suggest listening to the Invisible Touch album, and for something more intellectual, there's always the unique "Apocalypse in 9/8 (Co-Starring the Delicious Talents of Gabble Ratchet)" from the earlier Foxtrot album. Somewhere in between is the genius of the band on Selling England By The pound. Enjoy.

The first time I ever heard that song was way back in the 1980's as part of the sound track for Miami Vice with Don Johnson. So now when I hear it, I think; "Uh Oh! Someone is gonna get it!". Sort of like that deep dark feel of some cinematic experience. Musically it is a testiment of how well seasoned Phil Collins is actually and He is KNOWN for being masterful on drums world wide!
