'Of all the songs I have recorded. This, is the one I would like to be remembered for...'. Phil, I think you may be right on this one.. You will ALWAYS remain in our hearts and in our thoughts, even long after you have passed on, because of this beautiful, yet sorrowful track...
Thank you Phil... :-D.

In my memory I will always see the town that I have loved so well where our school played ball by the gas yard wall and we laughed through the smoke and the smell Going home in the rain, running up the dark lane, past ther gaol (jail) and down behind the fountain, those were happy days in so many, many ways in the town I loved so well. In the early morning, the shirt factory horn callde women from Creggan, the moor and the bog while their men on the dole played a mother's role fed the children and then trained the dogs. And when times got tough, there was just about enough but they saw it through without complaining for deep inside was a burning pride in the town I loved so well There was music there in the Derry air like a language that we all could understand I remember the day when I earned my first pay when I played in a small pick-up band there I spent my youth and to tell you the truth I was sad to leave it all behind me for I learned about life and I found a wife in the town I loved so well But when I returned how my eyes have burned to see how a town could be brought to its knees by the armoured cars and the bombed out bars and the gas that hangs on to every breeze Now the army's installed by the old gas yard wall and the damded barbed wire gets higher and higher with their tanks and their guns oh my God what have they done to the town I loved so well Now the music's gone but they carry on for their spirit's been bruised, never broken they will not forget but their hearts are set on tomorrow and peace once again. For what's done is done and what's won is won and what's lost is lost and gone forever I can only pray for a bright, brand new day in the town I loved so well

Phil Coulter, I met you in Jade Palace on Lisburn Rd in 1985. I had played your music for years. You were doing a concert in Opera House shortly. You said you would play a request for me. Embarrassing, but it took my friend to speak to her friend in orchestra on concert night. You mentioned me in your dedications. She has now died of cancer. Have always been a big fan of your music. Lived in Lapland, played it when I was homesick. There's really no-one with your talent for writing a melody.

I heard the song on the radio and has to listen to it again. The lyrics and his emotional rendition just brought me to a very nostalgic and truly sad place for all of our towns, where ever we grew up. Those times are forever lost to a cold and indifferent world. I feel so much heartache for what our beautiful earth is turning into.

Since Mr Coulter was born in 1942, it's not about his childhood in the 70s, it's about his childhood in the 50s and the "troubles" in the 70s which virtually destroyed Derry or Londonderry depending on your conviction. A brilliant, heart rending narrative set to music.

We were picked up after school in 1986. Phil Coulter's sister was missing. We were all in a Cortina. A BMW passed us at top speed. The driver of the car we were in commentated, and put the foot down as he did so, to follow said BMW. Derry and Donegal in the 80s. May Phil Coulter's sister rest in peace, and watch over us.

This is a lovely song sung with passion about a man's hometown. I am not native to this divided island but am shocked at how fervent everyone's hatred is for one another and how eagerly we wish to kill one another. For me, this behaviour underscores the need to be more kind to one another. Like it or not, This is where you make your stand. We are all human and in the greater scale of things this is nothing. Have some respect and enjoy the music this man has created. Thank you Phil Coulter

The words, the delivery, the emotion, the piano playing, the light background arrangement, the key change -- truly superb. I'm learning, in my old age to play the piano. This lovely piece I think is in the key of GMajor. The view of the gate in the city walls, at the bottom of a steep hill, Shipquay Street, reminds me of a tale my grandfather told. One wintry day in the 1880s a heavy fall of snow turned the streets to ice. A young man jumped on his toboggan - or "sleigh" as we used to call them. at the top of Shipquay Street, and went so fast he couldn't stop, and landed in the river - the Foyle, just behind the Guildhall. As children of the 1950s, we were amazed there was no traffic! Ian Donaldson

+I.L. Donaldson You've reminded me of a tongue-twister my mum (a Derry girl all her life in spite of years in England) used to say to us 'Shipquay Street's a slidey street to slide upon'. Well, it amused her. Aye surely.

I loved this version. I also like the Ronan Tynan version. I don't like or appreciate the narrow minded and nasty comments about Ireland. I'm not Irish. I am the enemy but recognize that we are all equals and extreme nationalistic comments don't solve anything. Let's appreciate the gifts of all, regardless of their nationality. A new day has dawned. As I'm sure most true enthusiasts know Phils first choice for singing this song was non other then the great Luke Kelly, for good reason. No one sings it like Luke did.
