@@joebarr725 Um, yes. Since you were just born yesterday, I'll explain to you quite simply how this works: Money. There's too much money involved to leave anything up to chance. Unless you really believe that the organized crime rings who run Vegas and the sports leagues will just leave all that money on the table when it's there for the taking. Notice how Vegas (the house) always wins? Sports leagues are classified as "entertainment" for a reason. It is completely legal for sports leagues to fix their games if they want to. And they do. Because why wouldn't they? It's a business. Sorry to shatter your illusions, young one, but that's how it works. I don't understand why they don't just let the computers call balls and strikes and give the ump behind the plate veto power. Ump has until the next pitch is thrown to overrule, so either the batter or the pitcher can delay and give them time, but the pitch clock rules force a resolution in a matter of seconds.

Umpires are part of what makes the game what it is. The calls (good and bad) and controversies add something to the baseball experience. Instant replay for fielding is fine but I like an ump making the calls behind the plate. Now that the tech exists, I think having a challenge option for a pitch that is way off the black (like a ball width or more) would be acceptable. The close ones would still be off limits for review but if a batter or catcher “knows” a call is way off and a challenge is made, there could be a call override process, it could only be applied to a called 3rd strike/walk scenario.
