After Grant's exit they gave Phil a total personality change and they turned him into a villain. But I think Grant and his family turning against him is what made Phil nasty. Phil lost his son, love of his life, brother and his mum showed no support when grant betrayed Phil. Topped with the 1994 accidental killing of the vagrant, that tipped Phil over the edge. Also I reckon the car crash here may have caused some minor brain damage to Phil, hence his descent into badass. Nick Tilsley in Corrie is an example of that, just not as bad as Phil.
