If you bump into your ex years later, this is how you can tell how she felt about you: If she introduces you to her new boyfriend and says your name, you didn't mean that much to her. But if she just says, "This was a friend some time ago" and doesn't mention your name....it's because she already talked about you over and over and didn't want her new boyfriend to spill the beans "Oh, the guy you always tell me about??"

Tough, tough crowd. It's harder to connect with a bigger audience, and 'Crowd Work' with smaller crowds is where Phil excels. If my instincts are right, Phil detects the crowd issue quickly: although he starts off heading towards 'dark', linguistically sophisticated humour, he realises it's the wrong crowd, and shifts his material at around the 1:05 mark.

This is interesting. Phil is super funny at comedy clubs. But when in front of large audiences, he himself does not look comfortable?
@zantas-handle10 ай бұрын
You're right, it is harder to connect with a bigger audience, and 'Crowd Work' with smaller crowds is where he excels. Also, as an Ex-Stage Performer, I can say this: at a small gig, usually the performer has been advertised as the main attraction, so people know in advance, and go specifically because they 'get him' and his humour. They know his material and his style, and WANT to enjoy it. At these bigger gigs, there may be NOBODY who gets your style at all, because you may be one performer in a full evening, and the audience is just waiting for the big name celeb comedian who they actually came to see. Or, as he mentions, you could just be immediately following that big name performer who is top of their game. Being the 'next guy on' is tough! Also, if it's a Canadian audience there can be a language issue for the French-speaking crowd, missing linguistic subtleties, which ruins witty material. If my instincts are right, Phil detects the crowd issue quickly: although he starts off heading towards 'dark', linguistically sophisticated humour, realises it's the wrong crowd, and shifts his material at around the 1:05 mark.
