Great fun on that road. Hats off to you for going for it. I would have bottled it. Shame it ended that way but that's classic mini personality for you!

And all because you forgot the legendary Marigold rubber glove and cable ties to protect the distributor from damp. That is how the works team Minis completed and won the Monte Carlo Rallies. Cut the tips off the fingers of a rubber glove, pass the HT leads through the fingers to the dizzy, slide the glove down over the dizzy and use cable ties around the finger tips to seal off. With the distributor cap right behind the front grille this has always been a problem.

Matthew Jenkins I have seen it done before but because the pertronix distributor is weather sealed from factory I don’t think it was the issue, time will tell though

put a plastic cover from the rocker until the distributor. had the same problem on Rain. after i put that everything was fine. love the wheel tyres ❤️

So What Killed it? Are you running Points? COndensor? Cap and Rotor intact? Electronic Distributor module die? (pertronix) Do a ' complete vid on troubleshooting ( you did no spark) DIagnosis of the bad part= then repair.
@AllThingsAlex5 жыл бұрын
Where you listening Justin. He clearly said he was running electronic ignition. Have no faith in them. When they fail, they fail. Points require a little more attention but you can normally tell when they're starting to play up.
@thelefticus15 жыл бұрын
@@AllThingsAlex oints are simple enough but they give up in heavy rain. Even with a splash guard. Yes you can try and waterproof your dizzy with plastic bags and such. But a decent electronic set up is way more reliable in my humble opinion. No fear of oints bounce and drive through any down pour!
@austennaeve6 жыл бұрын
too bad but im sure you had fun while it lasted. maybe look into some distributorless spark options. Im working on converting an old distributor into a cam sensor for a EFI system with wasted spark. using an thru beam photo eye with a home made single trigger wheel.

my brother did that with an arduino to a vw. theres a video on my channel somewhere about it

If guys get bored and/or have not covered it already in another video, please consider a 'road side' check list when you break down.. thanks gents
@Stevestonmotorco5 жыл бұрын
Good idea! By road side check list do you mean more of a diagnosis logic tree, or tools and parts to keep in the car?
@LoneStarMini5 жыл бұрын
Stevestonmotorco more of a how to check for the various simplistic problems, fire & fuel. Perhaps the basic tools. Thanks for considering
@Radfordperson5 жыл бұрын
That gear lever is longer than I have seen before, perhaps the extra leverage contributed to failure? My 1962 Mini was fitted with a 1968 gearbox in 1968 (remote change), to this day no problems with gear lever.
@Stevestonmotorco5 жыл бұрын
It was likely because a stronger detent spring was installed. Selecting the reverse gear takes more force than usual.

Granted we don`t have a great need for studded tyres in the UK but they are illegal here. Health and safety I imagine.

After this incident/adventure, would you recommend keeping a mechanical distributor?
@matthewjenkins11616 жыл бұрын
It is a known vulnerability caused by location behind the front grille. Easy solution is a rubber glove over it with HT leads fed through the fingers. That tow truck could have been totally avoided using that trick, but even then the dizzy cap could have been removed and damp driven out with a squirt of WD40. The hi tec solutions are what will leave you really stuck if and when they fail.
