Trumpet performers can better appreciate a performance like this, having worked this through this ourselves. I particularly enjoyed his cadenzas. We can enjoy the gift while we have it. The gift was ours to borrow. Best to you Phillip Smith.

I was at this performance. We became friends and got to play together a few times not only as friends but as a mentor. Classy and funny guy with a wry sense of humor. I was sorry when he moved out of NJ.

What an amazing performance! One of the best I’ve heard of the Haydn.

Phil is now doing good work with students at the University of Georgia. What a wonderful man and trumpet player.

Kudos to Renold Schilke for making an instrument so great that the Haydn and Hummel concertos should just come in the case when you buy the horn.

That cadenza. My gosh. I wouldn’t want to play that even in a deserted village in an unoccupied house inside an empty room. Ever.

Bookspan's claim that the first complete recording was an LP is mistaken; there was a 78 version in 1946, with one Harry Mortimer the soloist, now on youtube.

Two comments here. I was at this concert. The savages have won .

Yeah, you mentioned that. Who are the savages? If it’s ads you should think about who you vote for. I pay to avoid that, but The Internet was not intended for assholes to fuck people over for cash. Maybe I do understand who the savages are... Phil Smith just sails through those cadenzas. Met him about two years before this at WMI. Wished for far more trumpet interaction that week.

@@michaelrandall9034 Had the pleasure of doing some performances where he was our soloist. Nice man and l took some lessons when he lived in Jersey. Appears a bit stiff at first but very cool as he gets to know you.

a little dramatic? I'm just finishing up a full season with my orchestras out here in Colorado.

It is always interesting to hear the performer's own cadenza and see just how unstylistic it can be. Phil played it very well so I am sure Haydn would forgive him. This performance was a long time ago...maybe 40 years ago.
