The Crystals - Da Doo Ron Ron
The Ronettes - Be My Baby
Two great performances with reminiscences from Larry Levine and Stan Ross, Jeff Barry who co-wrote both songs, and also from Nino Tempo.
These scenes, whch I re-edited, are taken from a 1983 documentary "DA DOO RON RON" by filmmaker Binia Tymieniecka - shown on UK TV 26/01/1985.

Phil Spector invented surround sound. He knew that a beat surrounding you with singing is very tribal and uplifting. He thought out of the box for that time.He might be a lunatic but he gave us modern music from that day on and that’s huge

To the naysayers: Wall of Sound is great because it's interesting for the ear to listen to. Read about f.e. stochastic noise. The brain likes "noise" - which, as a concept isn't limited to white, pink, brown noise. Furthermore, the "melting together" of complex harmonics is loved by both our ears and our hearts. PERIOD. That's all there is to that debate. Do I like clean sound as well? Yes. Of course. Of COURSE I can frickin' indulge in a Steely Dan or Roxy Music production. OF FRICKIN' COURSE. Who can't? But that doesn't take anything away from Phil Spector's Wall of Sound. It's just something else. It's "all good" - so to speak. There's no "this is right" or "this is wrong" when it comes to music and sound. Only rule is: if it touches our emotions: it's good. And that's it.

i remember as a kid in the 80's listening to the "oldies" and loved them. The only problem i ever had with them was they were too short. I remember La Bamba and hearing the extended music for the movie and just amazed at the instrumental middle portions. Imagine and extended version with the wall of sound letting people enjoy the music for 4+ minutes instead of 2. Still love the music.

I guess I liked the "wall of sound" because it seemed to capture the energy of being at a concert. It didn't work for everything, but songs like Be My Baby wouldn't be quite the same without it. I held Phil Spector in high esteem because of so many songs I liked that he had been evolved with. When I heard the truth about Ronnie and the Ronettes and Phil's darker side, I was very disappointed. It would be nearly impossible to remain squeaky clean in the music industry. When money and drugs are driving forces, you can expect problems. However, it appears that Phil had problems long before either of these came along. As bad as I feel about Phil, I still get a thrill when I watch Ronnie singing Be My Baby in '65. It just wasn't smart to do what he did to that girl and that group. I guess not as bad as murder though.

Phil is a classic case of progeny born to two first cousins whose parents were first cousins as well (both of his grandfathers were named George Spector). Mental and emotional instability is a hallmark of close inbreeding as are physical attributes at the edges of the normal range or often beyond. Both Phil and his sister, as well as his father and mother were more than a trifle off. As Spector aged, his ability to control himself-- never particularly good at any point, anyway-- declined until the instability took over completely. Always mecurial, Phil alternated between rational genius Phil and berserk genius Phil. His legendary tirades were often filled with astonishingly penetrating insight.

@@Versul1 I'm coming to the same conclusion, Don. I've been listening very carefully to his work since Ronnie died (2 months after you replied to Michavioln's excellent 7 year old comment). It is certainly an identifiable sound, but it's so bombastic and overdone, as you said. Unfortunately, it's all about being way over the top these days, too. Just listen to any of the competitive music programs on tv - if you can. Over-wrought and anonymous... but perfect. Said the old dude who never amounted to a hill of beans.

You all seriously need to pull your heads out of your asses... Phil Spector was a musical genius that contributed so much to so many bands... He made music back when music was real, not over-processed, digitized, and auto-tuned... He took musicians and molded them into a sound that cannot be created today. Whatever happened with Lana Clarkson happened and he is serving his time for his involvement. That doesn't detract from his musical skills one whit...

I recall Darlene Love saying that Phil wanted his songs to be where you could hear all the instruments coming through the single speaker that most listen to records with back then. Mono speakers give a complete different sound than our more modern Stereo ones which he never made the songs for. The version here compared to the original does blend the background more, to a loud hum a some have said.

GOD how I wish the Beatles had cover "Be my baby" ... That Bass intro is PURE JOY! It flows but it is firmly anchored . The harmonies would have soared . Just listen to John's version and imagine the impact of the four doing it , with a high McCartney Falsetto. Coincidentally.. the drums ARE a typical Ringo fare. An accented 4 note muted flam and two bass drum beats close the verse.

@Brambleiah Yes, their vocals are live, at least on this particular show. And the the music itself also sounds a slightly different and "thinner" than what's on the original recording. In any case, there was also the practice on TV shows of having a group sing live WITH the actual music recording in the background - or simply with the vocals on the recording de-emphasized (ala "kareokee" style). :)

Few people understand what that echo chamber did. And what noise (in all its forms) does, to a recording and the way it's perceived and experienced by the brain. Hint: noise has been seen as the enemy of audio, since the first recording was made. Now, science begins to tell a different story: the brain ENJOYS a bit of noise. Some complexity. Not too much, but a little. Alas, "wall of sound" is just one way to record and mix a song. Listening to f.e. Steely Dan, Roxy Music / Bryan Ferry, or Fleetwood Mac is another, totally different way to do it. If you wanna hear modern interpretations of "wall of sound" listen to music by Raveonettes. Sune Wagner is a fan of Phil Spector's productions and has incorporated the sound, in his own way, in their recordings. Heck, even their name alludes to it: the "Raveon" is a tribute to Buddy Holly's Rave On, and "nettes" is a tribute to: The Ronettes. Why? Because of Phil Spectors productions.

@Brambleiah If you mean Live on *TV*, then, yes, bands would most often (but not always) lip-sync to their original recording. In an actual live performance concert venue, of course, everything would indeed be "live". But the more complex & layered the recording, the less the live performance would be technically able to sound like it. In this clip, the Crystals *are* lip-synching to the record, but the additional sounds of the TV audience give it more of a "live" quality.

I can't seem to find anyone who shares my "concern" -- or rather my outright disdain -- not for what people like Phil Spector and Brian Wilson have done by 'jimmying' with what the performers themselves originally did, but for what seems to have followed ('evolved' is too good a word for what they have done) in the wake of the Spectors and Wilsons. I'm talking about every Tom, Dick, and Harry who thinks that because he has a 'control room' with all the new high tech gadgets, he can be a Phil Spector or a Brian Wilson. They seem to forget that those two guys were absolute geniuses when they were in their prime doing what they did. The problem (as I see it anyhow) is that the idea seems to be: "We can improve on what the performers have done." Oh, really? Who says so? Yes, you have the technology, the machinery, the gadgets, BUT DO YOU HAVE THE TALENT? That's #1. Second, where is it written that the performers automatically did what they did such that your jimmying was required? My pet peeve -- which is what I was leading up to, admittedly -- is what these guys in "the truck" are doing to TV football games with their technological gadgets. It rankles me to no end to know that some guy hardly half my age is pushing this button and THAT button, raising that lever or THAT lever, changing what I am trying to watch as far as what the PERFORMERS are doing on the field. Talk about DISTRACTIONS! You don't watch a football game on TV any more. You watch THE GRAPHICS! And instead of your being the beneficiary of what a genius such as a Spector or a Wilson has to offer you, you are simply being aggravated by another hack, another pop-up artist, who is sitting in a truck adjacent to the football field, fantasizing that he is a genius in the same groove with Spector or Wilson, spitting out the same hackneyed graphics, one after the other.

Apart from Spector being a sociopathic murderer, he cleverly and creatively used the technology available to him at the time to create, literally, awesome sounding records. Without his approach to records during the Girl Group Era we probably wouldn't have had The Beatles, or Brian Wilson wouldn't have been inspired to create 'Pet Sounds". Maybe I'm wrong, but wasn't a key feature of the WOS, was putting almost each mic on a separate track so they could be mixed to infinity and to multi-track the vocals? I think this was something new then.

I don't believe they had that many tracks back in 63/64. Probably 8 at the most. Mic the room and drums and between keyboards. Then add a stand up bass and Fender bass. Phil bounced down a few tracks to layer vocals and backup vocals. But, it was all done live with few overdubs, which is amazing.

He was a musical genius who changed the musical landscape for good, people can try and deny that but it’s a fact. So many of his records are considered to be amongst the greatest ever made. His obvious mental health issues and later the murder won’t change that.

The first time you hear a PHIL SPECTOR record you are amazed at the level of production. The 2nd time you listen to that record you are listening to the record as you would any other....do you like the singer and the song. The 3rd time you listen to that same record you start to listen to the music - the wall itself - and begin to try and hear all the instruments. It is at this point you become obsessed with trying to figure out how many instruments are on the recording and you listen forever.

What's really important to remember here is that back in the day the music was designed to be heard in mono coming thru the single speaker in the middle of a car's dashboard or a transistor radio speaker

I think Wall of Sound was an attempt to give texture and dimension to mono recordings, and it worked. It was mono in stereo (or stereo in mono). Sounds mystical, which it is.
@jocarr4642

It gave a stereo sound in a mono setting. It was worth it for him to go through with it. If I was a band or musician during that time I would of loved working with Spector cause I respect audio quality. I would even change my approach

There's something almost eerie about it, the echoes of echoes and densely-packed musicians playing take after take until they were exhausted and melded together. The vocal track sort of floated in this. My favorite example is River Deep, Mountain High.
