Because the speaker said that we don't have a sword and shield to take up, I just want to correct the misconception that, if the battle is the LORD's, we don't have weapons we are responsible to use. The imagery of fighting on our knees is good as far as it goes. Another imagery is that we DO have the whole armor of God to put on as gatherings of believers where we are explicitly told, "Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication" (Ephesians 6:14-18). "Stand therefore" is not referring to the physical posture of a person but the spiritual posture of the church. We take our stand in Christ, sometimes praying on our knees, but also "taking up" the weapons of our warfare. No matter what else we are doing as churches, clothing ourselves in the whole armor of God must be part of the picture. The part God himself gives it.
