@robertw An aerial Ladder is a snorkel. Either Snorkel 2 or Snorkel 28 was availble and out of service at this time so there had tillers to replace.

Breaks my heart that this happened. I was 21 years old when the 12 alarm conflagration happened on New Years Day in '63 at Tenth & Diamond. Philly fire guys are without equal when it comes to fighting fire. It's the city that fails its people allowing all those abandoned buildings to stand. Something is broken in Philly. Look to New York and you will see how city management should be done.

They torch them in NYC, look no further than the factories and warehouse in Williamsburg/Greenpoint and the west side of NYC. Same thing, NY would let them got to a decrepit state, they would buy the lots and then burn them down

About the 11:20 mark the dispatcher asks if a conventional ladder is wanted due to no aerial ladders available. What is the difference between the two? Departments vary with their use in terms for different apparatus.
@PhillyMotoXTS10 ай бұрын
Philly mostly runs tiller ladders that are straight ladders. Aerial ladders are non-tillered and have platforms for firefighters to stand on ("buckets" some may call them).

Can anyone comment on the Jan.1,1963 Tenth & Diamond Street fire in Philly? I'm looking for eyewitness comments on this 12 alarm fire. Thanks.

Totally preventable disaster had the massive building not been occupied by squatters. Two good men died for fighting fire in the collapse zone. Sickening.

You are referring to the Fretz Building fire I'm gathering? It went to 12 1/2 alarms If you've been in the PFD museum they have a huge picture on the wall showing the fire and companies in service with deluge guns on top of homes surrounding the building. It was a surround & drown operation. This fire is also shown in the book "Tin Helmets

Iron Men. It was on one of the Out Of The Past stories of the Philly Fire Feed website some time ago. This fire sounds like a professional arson job. By the time the engine company arrived on location the fire was fully involved per their report to radio. Owners of these buildings are probably deceased then handed down to offspring. They feel a pain in the ass to pay the taxes so they hire someone to torch it. That's why no one observes them in the building torching it @3am in the morning. By this time the owners just hire a company to clean up the mess instead of spending a ton of $ to demolish the building if it was still standing. Those old buildings were all wooden floors if used in the textile industry.

Jasper & York was the old Thomas Buck Hosiery Company where they made millions of pairs of socks over many years. Buck Hosiery was on this day a vacant structure occupied by squatters who did what they do best; burn historic old buildings down, and kill brave men trying to quell the fire.

A Snorkel is not an aerial ladder PFD chase!!!!!!!
@LancasterResponding8 жыл бұрын
A snorkel is most definitely an aerial device. You might be thinking of a snozzle.
@icexspectre61048 жыл бұрын
he said aerial ladder, which a snorkel is NOT an aerial ladder, is a nozzle on a boom that they can manipulate around wires etc

Very sad. It is difficult to comprehend the dispatcher coz he talks so fast that he is impossible to follow. Not a good way to communicate.
