I just made home made liquid laundry cleaner! Castile soap, vinegar, glycerin, and lemon EO (the lemon is an anti fungal, viral, biotic, and bacterial) and for helping get mold out of clothes adding an orange and tea tree helps additional funk. And the funk of the clothes might be from the drum of the wash that needs to have the tea tree and lemon or orange EO with the vinegar to just clean the drum itself.

Heads up on laundry! I used those homemade laundry soap recipes for so so long until I learned something very interesting. True soap actually doesn’t do super well with porous materials like clothing. You know how you get soap scum buildup on your shower walls? The same thing happens on your clothes. That’s why detergents are so much better for you clothes. They rinse cleaner and leave less of a residual stink behind. I also highly recommend stripping your clothes every once in a while. Dumping them in a bathtub full of hot water with a cup of powdered laundry detergent (tide is the best), a cup of washing soda, and a cup of borax. You’ll be disgusted with what it pulls out, and amazed at how much better your laundry smells!

Alex - good tip about the vinegar! I have discovered a wonderful laundry product - Tru Earth - it is dehydrated earth-friendly laundry soap that comes in a sheet and is packaged in a compostible box! No need to carry all the water in regular laundry soap home from the store in a non-recyclable plastic jug. I have been using Tru Earth for a year and a half and I am well pleased with the job it does. I'll try the vinegar, but this stuff is great!

Not sure how or even if this fits in with your gardening philosophy but growing potatoes in old car tyres is so easy and fun. Start with 2 tyres placed on the ground. Plant your potatoes in good soil in the tyres. When they have a nice amount of foliage place another tyre on top and add more soil. The plants will continue to grow upwards and potatoes will form in the soil as it goes up. Paint the tyres bright colours if you want it to look fun. Once the plant dies back at the end of the season, start to remove the tyres harvesting your potatoes layer by layer. The easiest no dig method.

Vinegar will cause metal to rust (stainless also). I used to use it in the rinse cycle of the dishwasher all the time, but those were rentals and I wasn't there long enough to see the mess it is capable of. Got a brand new dishwasher a few years ago and already there is rusting, especially the tines that separate the plates and such. One rusted and broke right off. We had a plumber in to fix the washer and I asked him about vinegar and he said the ph will cause it to pit and eventually rust any metal parts. You should use a pack of kool-aid lemonade without the sugar as a cleaner fot dishwasher and washer. The citric acid will clean beautifully! Dishes with no spots and use the kool-aid once or twice a month depending on how often you use them. Diswasher run on long cycle and washer filled half way with hot water... slosh it a minute and let sit for hour. Then run the full cycle. The smell tends to stay in the washer from being damp and should leave door open between use. Works great! Best money spent on a plumber with a free side of great advice 😀

Alex, Please consider another natural laundry idea. I have a product called Eco WasherPro. It is connected to my washing maching cold water line. When the water passes through the Eco Washer Pro it adds oxygen to the water and turns it into hydrogen peroxide. As we know water is H2O and water is H2O2 and hydrogen peroide kills germs. Ho spitals use Eco Washeres or some brand of the same sort of product. Also your cloths do not need fabric softener in the rinse cycle or in the dryer

Another FYI: I'm a chemist working in the federal government. I'm not trying to push chemicals but just fyi, there are certain ingredients in commercial detergents such as surfactants that give the product certain properties such as foam control, dissolving in water, etc. The other thing to be mindful about is mixing different chemicals/substances/products because sometimes they react (the classic example is chlorine bleach and ammonia). If you are interested in consumer-friendly sources of info let me know. I love seeing your little farm evolve:)))
