As a retired CO, I can tell you that some guys were really good at making jailhouse hooch, and other guys were one step homemade poison. I remember one time an entire housing unit on a Sunday drank this batch and they all got sick, to the point when chow arrived at dinner, NOT ONE of the 40 inmates even bothered to come to the food cart to get dinner. Of course, it was egg salad sandwiches so who could blame them.

When I was down years ago we made it with bags of fruit juice we'd get for breakfast and let ferment and then packs koolaid from commissary that were loaded with sugar. we would keep it in a trash can in the day room shower while we played cards so if they came in for a shakedown someone would get in the shower and hold it against the wall behind the door and stay in there till they were done searching. If ur concerned about mold you can also heat it in your heating pot, it doesn't need to boil just maybe 160-170°F. Also if you can try to hide it away from your bed, like by a toilet next to the cleaning stuff. Once a guard found mine and took it out with him, and I wondered if it exploded or not lol.

You can probably pasteurize it to make it safe. Or maybe leave it in the bottle and put the bottle in boiling water. Leave it capped. Don’t let the wine come to a boil in the bottle or it will blow up. Maybe put in the water, let it get good and hot, take it out, burp the bottle, then do it all over again a bunch of times. That might work, I can’t say for sure.

They can modify those to get hotter, but can get in trouble for it. They also make jury rigged improvised hot plates. If they can make a tattoo machine, they can easily make something that gets hot.

@@katiestevens8640 What kind of container did you use? Don’t keep it in the refrigerator while it ferments. I think it effects the yeast, you want it at room temperature. My friend is a chef and would make pineapple hootch every once and awhile. He just used a big salad bowl covered with plastic wrap. That made it easy to vent, it almost does it itself. He would dump tons of sugar in it. It always has this weird slimy feel when you drink it. I don’t like it.

I'd be more inclined to call it cider, depending on how far you ferment it but I guess wine's fine, such as if over 6% alcohol. Unsure you need the ketchup or even bread if there's natural yeast on the outside of the oranges (skin). Sugar's good, water too... And if you could somehow distill it in prison (simple pot distillation, so lighter, a pot, a bowl and cold water or ice?), you'd have a start to some prison moonshine. Look up water/plastic/pop bottle water distillation methods too maybe for a very slow evaporation distillation method (the stuff/equipment hidden under your bed of course, cuz no one thinks of looking under there-- too obvious-- or inside the human-crawlable-size ventilation ducts like in the movies ;). You could put practically anything that yeast ferments in the bag-- including ketchup-- and a proper distillation wouldn't likely give you much of anything except some methanol, water, ethanol (the alcohol part that you want/crave/long for) some flavinoids or whatever they're called, and maybe a bit of a hangover. Just ditch the foreshots or heads or whatever they're called I forget, depending on how much you'll be making and how much you might like methanol** haha. If you take too much methanol by accident or even on purpose, apparently a cure is ethanol. So, more booze/poison. Counterintuitive in a sense, but there you go. ** That might be worth keeping for lighter fluid, but it's just an idea/educated guess. Cheers! ^u^

I mean consider the source - this isnt someone who got too many parking tickets, this is made by someone who is looking at a lot of years or possibly life. They're probably not going to see the outside world for a long time if ever again, so they make as close a semblance of normal indulgence as they can from what they have on hand. Best case scenario: tastes like ass but you get drunk. Worst case scenario: you get sick or die, but really that's still an escape from jail in its own way.
