I agree; he is amazing to get a picture. I had a Philco 49-1240 rebuild. The tuner was like this one. Dead. Contacts yes. But the oscillator plate blocking coil was failing frequency test when I rang it. So I used the mixer filament blocking coil which rang & worked well in its place. The local oscillator started running; the Philco would accept an antenna signal. These tuner are very rare just like the chassis. But tuners are a black box to many. I get why he stopped. Most people understand a DC battery and a light but AC is next level stuff. He clearly knows more. But it isn't a television yet.

Interesting, so they encapsulated it with a dry paper roll, than fill it up with oil? I would expect the paper roll to expand after wetting it with oil, but since it's encapsulated in hard resin, it can't. I wonder if this might be one of the issues with these capacitors, and one possible reason for them cracking.
@frankowalker46622 жыл бұрын
@@mrnmrn1 Yes, It's definately a factor, also the materials inside can start to break down, and with too much current going through them the oil can start to overheat and boil.

@johnhpalmer60982 жыл бұрын
If memory is correct, he had another major challenge with a late 50's RCA table top TV in a metal cabinet that he found at an old mining town that was abandoned in the mid 70's. It was either a 21" or a 24" B&W that had been sitting I think face down in the bedroom of a house who's roof had all but caved in and had let the elements rain in over the past nearly 50 years and many of the pots were totally rusted/frozen and he got it running, strictly to resurrect. That same place, same time, he found several other sets and a few things from the dump, including a GE clock radio that he got working (the radio part) after the case has been partially smashed, speaker disintegrated etc and left to the hot desert elements and totally baked badly, but he got it going, for a short time if I recall. A testament to his skill set.
