There needs to be more E-flat masterclasses like this. Too many lesser experienced musicians treat this instrument as more of a noise maker or squeak toy of sorts, rather than the upper extension of the clarinet register and a bonfire and beautifully effective soprano instrument. Magnificent insight. Thanks for posting this!

It’s the same fingering as a B flat clarinet, it’s just transposed to the key of e flat. It’s the equivalent of playing a c major scale on the piano but it comes out as an E flat major scale.

I first played Eb clarinet in summer school bands in my teens, I was provided with a school-owned instrument that was horribly out of tune with itself. The director would stop in rehearsals and tell me "you're out of tune!" At first I just thought "but the instrument is out of tune! What am I supposed to do?!" Finally, I decided to figure out how to compensate, noting what notes were flat, lipping those up, which were sharp, lipping those down. After two weeks, the director stopped in rehearsal and said to me, surprised, "you're in tune...!" And the same thing happened the following two summers...! It taught me an invaluable lesson: constantly listening to my pitch and compensating as needed. Years later, I was able to buy my own Eb, which fortunately turned out to be in tune, hurrah!

I absolutely love playing the Eb. I am very lucky, born with a good sense of pitch. I also love the music arranged for the instrument. It so much more fun to play than the Bb music. I don't think I've ever heard of a principal Eb player. I've seen mostly the 3rd chair Bb player assigned to play the Eb!

Thank you! Jennifer said that it is an old 'Boosey & Hawkes Imperial E-flat Clarinet' with a custom built barrel made by Alan Andrews. They have unfortunately been discontinued and haven't been made since the 1970's. Interestingly, she added that the mouthpiece is a Boosey & Hawkes design too and that the modern French mouthpieces are incompatible. We hope that helps. All the best, The Philharmonia.

The end of the era of bards overlapped the beginning of the era of the chalumeau (the simple folk instrument that’s the immediate predecessor of the clarinet), though only by a few decades, mainly in the 1600’s; so a chalumeau-playing bard wouldn’t be impossible.

When I first played the Eefer in an orchestra, I quickly learned about the necessity of alternate fingerings in the upper register to stay in tune. After decades of playing standard Bb clarinet fingerings, all of a sudden I had to learn those notes all over again. It took a lot of practice, but in the end I learned alternate fingerings for high C, C#, D D# and E. I played the concert without a hitch and in tune. It was one of the more satisfying things I've done in music!

I'm considering playing the Eb clarinet in my high school marching band (as well as the regular band class) and I have a few questions... -Would an Eb clarinet "fit" in a marching band? -Is there a lot a music written for the Eb clarinet? -How easy would it be to play this instrument coming from the alto sax.? -How long would you say it takes to "master" the instrument (If there is a limit at all)? Please respond if you know any answers! :)
@llllll4765
@llllll4765 7 жыл бұрын
-Eb clarinets usually aren't in marching bands, but they occasionally are. -There's a lot of Eb parts in concert band pieces, but usually not orchestral. -It would actually be really hard, I suggest learning Bb clarinet first to get a feel for clarinets. -Depends on how much you practice, if you're coming from a Bb clarinet with 3/4 years of experience on it then maybe a year-2 years, but without Bb clarinet experience then maybe 3-5 years.
@joeheid2776

Hard to imagine even an Eb clarinet penetrating through a typical marching band to make it worthwhile. I'd stick to Bb. Not sure of your proficiency, but only a very confident talented player would make it loud enough to hear.
@zvonimirtosic6171
@zvonimirtosic6171 4 жыл бұрын
Eb clarinet can be louder than Bb clarinet, so don't worry about it; it is used and can be used in marching bands. Eb clarinet and Eb alto sax have the same tuning, so playing both will be seamless for you because the tuning is same. Similarly, playing Bb clarinet, and Bb tenor sax or Bb soprano sax makes sense too, because of the same tuning. That means, on instruments with same tunings, you play in same music keys, and don't need to do transposing acrobatics.

Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) I think maybe a few sqeaks and squaks from a few of our top players. We only have it in place of an oboe when there's no one who can play it. MattTheBandKid It must have been a delightful sound! It is an interesting thought that it isn't always as simple as one might think when switching between instruments of the same family, or rather it often requires a subtle change of approach. It's also a point that Jennifer raises in this video too.
@MattTheBandKid

Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) I agree, as a brass musician changing from something like the trumpet to the tuba, or the euphonium to the tuba it's very difficult and almost learning a whole new way of music, but they are so similar that it's easy to initially understand them.
@philharmonia_orchestra
@philharmonia_orchestra 11 жыл бұрын
MattTheBandKid True. Fundamentally, brass instruments work in the same way: changing pitch by altering the length of tubing and the appropriate use of embouchure. So conceptually, there shouldn't be an issue. However it's often the other factors, such as how this alteration is achieved, that can make switching difficult. This can be seen when comparing instruments that operate using different systems - for instance between a trumpet (commonly using valves) and a trombone (a slide mechanism).

Thank you for this lovely video! I have a question if anyone have any answer. My 9 years old boy has enter the music school for clarinet 3 months ago. From my perspective (don't know anything about clarinet) he was doing ok, he remembers every new note immediately, tone is fine, but it's not good enough the way he's holding it and his breathing (tho I think it take some more time for kids to learn it). Anyway, professor is always like "he is good with trying, but...he's late in relation to other 4 students in first grade. Prof. realized after 3 months that his hands are just too small for clarinet Bb and suggested to try with clarinet Es. My question is- is this a good idea? He wants this to be like temporary solution, which I think it's way better that just giving up only because he is still a small kid, but will it be harder for him later to come back to Bb clarinet (and he have to, 'cause it's not a practice to study Es clarinet in that school)? I'm thankful to the prof. 'cause he's not giving up from him yet. My boy loves to practice even he sees that it doesn't go easy for him and the main reason is physical obstacle (which is going to change in a year or two). Thank you ♥

I've got to say, this is not one of my favourite instruments. It works well in roles like the Berlioz example, where it's supposed to be grotesque, but like a lot of extreme instruments (piccolo, various percussion), sparse use is probably best. Maybe if there were more examples in orchestral literature where it wasn't so squeaky and intentionally irritating, it would have a better image. I'm surprised the Philharmonia actually has an E-flat specialist; I figured these were just played by B-flat clarinetists.

You should make sure the reed is moved up as far as possible (with reason) and that should eliminate most of the airy sound, this helped me on my B-flat.

forgive me if this is something that varies by region, but in most parts of north America the Eb is called the Sopranino and the Ab is recognized as the Piccolo of the clarinet family

Shannon Lim, intonation problems can sometimes be caused simply by a mismatch of mouthpiece and clarinet. It's worth trying some different mouthpieces with different openings to see if this solves your problem. A different reed strength can also have an effect on intonation. If you're clarinet isn't the problem it's always good to play with other players to improve your intonation. Intonation is rarely absolute so listening and learning to play with others is key to overcoming these problems. With time, adjusting your pitch to match others will become second nature and improve your solo playing too.

usually if a clarinet is flat and you have pushed in the joints you need to tighten your ligature or adjust how high it is on the mouth piece. maybe you can try adjusting your embouchure. i only play a Bb but when i play high notes i sometimes adjust what keys im pressing.

Musicians often talk about 't' and 'd' tonguing, without knowing their phonetics. A 't' in English is just a 'd' with no sound from the vocal cords, so as far as wind instruments go, they are identical.
@davidhay125

Personally I find thinking of a 'd' helpful for tonguing as it encourages my tongue to remain lower and keeps my throat open.

Not really. Try whispering a d and t and you'll notice that the t is much more plosive. We tongue with d since it's gentler.
