As russian double-bass player, I can confirm, that the thing with bows about Petersburg and Moscow is absolutely true. We in Moscow have the french bow school more widely spread, and mentors encourage us to use french bows, although they don't prohibit to use german ones. Vice versa in St. Prtersburg.

@@philharmonia_orchestra Why can't the Double Bass also be tuned in Fifths? Of coruse there is a way to tune the Double Bass in fifths because Pirastro makes strings designed for that very tuning. The Strings are Obligato 5ths tuned Double Bass Strings and they also make a single High E String that's suitable for 5 String Double Basses. Red Mitchell was known for reviving Fifths tuning on a Double Bass so he can come up with very clever arrangements. Fifths tuning for Bass might allow the Basses to resonate with the other members of the Violin family a little more. Another advantage to using 5ths tuning on a Double Bass is that especially with a 5 String Double Bass tuned C, G, D, A, E the Bassist could also transcribe Violin Concertos for 5ths tuned Double Bass w/o having to transpose the solo Violin part cause it'll sound 2 Octaves lower than written in Treble Clef when playing Solo Violin pieces. For example I want to get a 5 String Double Bass and tune it in Fifths (C, G, D, A, E) which is the same tuning as a 5 String Violin but 2 Octaves lower, so I could arrange Tchaikovsky's Violin Concerto for Double Bass.

What I really love about these videos is this: While the musicians are explaining what their instrument is and how it is used, have a normal physical presence and facial expressions etc. But when it comes time to play - wow! Their facial expressions and whole physical demeanours change drastically! They almost become entirely different people. This can only be the deep passion each one feels about their music. Really interesting to see!
@onceamusician54087 ай бұрын
"this can only be passion? I think not. the sheer effort and concentration required to play any musical interest to a professional standard is gigantic, and the intensity i poured into it appeared to be passionate love when it was something else entirely. and in the end after nearly 25 years in my orchestra i quit. Moreover because my talent had complicated the issue my colleagues thought i was crazy or that i never meant it and would be back. that was over 18 years ago because they too confused my searing intensity with passion when it was not music is a job like any other other and some musicians can and do feel trapped in a profession because they think they can do nothing else. I was one of these poor unfortunates until i discovered i could support myself by other means. I was a common labourer and proud of it where the music profession was so demanding that i only grew to hate it and now i am retired at age 65

I love these videos because they're so down to earth and offer a great sense of not only how the instruments sound, but the history of the instruments as well as how they fit in with the orchestra. I do have one question that has bothered me for quite a while, why is it that saxophones are less likely to appear in Symphonies and Orchestras. If someone could fill me in on that I'd be very grateful. ;) (I play the alto, baritone, and soprillo saxophones)
@philharmonia_orchestra10 жыл бұрын
Ginger5010, thank you for your wonderful feedback! In regards to your question about the saxophone in the orchestra, when compared to most orchestral instruments the saxophone is a relatively new instrument and therefore, there are less classical scores written that include it. It's not a German built, old master's instrument handed down from generations, and costing $30 grand, but It'll serve my purposes very well. It's like anything else you invest at the level of your interest and goals. I don't intend to be the principal bassist in a philharmonic. I just want to anchor an accoustic jazz trio or quartet. Philharmonia Orchestra (London, UK) The Double Bass can also be tuned in Fifths (C, G, D, A) like the Cello but an Octave lower allowing the Bass to enhance the resonance, enable you to play Cello pieces on the Bass, and also stay more in tune with the rest of the orchestra. The 5 String Double Bass tuned in Fifths adds a High E String which is 2 Octaves below the Violin E String. So a 5Bass is basically a 5 String Bass Violin tuned like a 5 String Violin but 2 Octaves lower, and it can be used to arrange various pieces for Bass. For Cello pieces and Bass Pieces they'll sound an octave lower than written, for Violin and Viola pieces the instrument will sound 2 octaves lower than written.

A solo Sonata must utilise as much as possible of a solo instrument's strength, both of articulation and expression. The instrument must be given the part of a great opera singer.

This episode was great! I put in one year in 9th grade (USA) playing (the only) bass with a student orchestra. I didn't know anything about anything until one day the school music director came up to me in the hall at school and since I looked strong asked me if I'd like to play bass. One of the rare moments when I didn't turn something down. I started taking lessons from this fellow (Mario Trezza) and coming to rehearsals. We played mostly simple stuff that first year high school students could handle (ages 14/15). 60+ years later I know something about some things but mostly I still know nothing about anything. I did however sing choral music for many years in pretty-good ensembles. PS: the bass I played in 9th grade had a large crack in it. Money was hard to find in the suburbs in the mid-50s. Love the bass!!

Well they had lots and lots of experience playing it. So it's about practicing frequently especially with your ears for fretless instruments

Joke's on you, they aren't used in orchestras, aka the "string section". I believe there might be one in France that an orchestra owns, but that doesn't count cause that's just one.

Nice, I went to see Vienna Philharmonic last year, absolutely top class but then it is Austria after all. I love double bass when it's fused with genres it's not classically associated with. Please listen to Fouk - Cat Lady

Thanks have subscribed. As a church musician with a life long interest in the orchestra I have thoroughly enjoyed the series. It gives me a new respect and admiration for other instruments I may never have considered. This series is suitable for all ages and levels of accomplishment whether a complete beginner or more experience musician.

It's a giant, fretless viol; however, some people argue for a violin heritage. It's neither, but an interesting instrument, regardless. Yes, I play bass.

The term "string bass" is most often used in wind bands to differentiate it from the tuba, which may also be referred to as a "bass" in these ensembles.

The Double Bass can also be tuned in Fifths which is the same tuning as a Cello but an Octave lower (That's C, G, D, A plus a High E for the 5 String Basses). The advantage of tuning a Double Bass in Fifths (weather it's 4 or 5 Strings) is that you'll have a much more managable range going down to Low C w/o any need to use that old extension, bigger resonance, better intonation, & the Major 10th interval can be done w/o any need to shift. Joel Quarlington & Tomoya Aomori tune in Fifths cause it has better intonation. Red Mitchell was the 1'st to revive Fifths tuning for Double Bass & lots of other Bassists gave it a shot. Keep in mind students would have alot more fun learning the Double Bass if it's a 5Bass (5 String Double Bass tuned in Fifths available in every size from 4/4 to 1/32 which the 1/32 is tuned an Octave above the rest of the sizes cause 1 it has a small body, & 2 the thinner strings will be easier for tiny hands to play) because they'll have better intonation & play more in tune.

4:33 Many years ago I remember watching a TV show in America called Paul Sand in Friends and Lovers where the protagonist, a concert bass player, was shown hauling his bass violin around the city (Boston?) during the show's opening. I could empathize with you guys somewhat since at that time I played baritone horn in my 5th grade band and had to carry my instrument 3 blocks from my home to school twice a week.

The double bass is not really the largest and deepest sounding string instrument. There is a larger one that is also the very deep, but it is too large to use(about 2meters tall) The Octobasse It does a C0 which is about 16hz.

What type of strings are used on double basses. Are they flatwound strings?
@philharmonia_orchestra10 жыл бұрын
***** Double bassists have a choice of synthetic core, steel core or gut strings (typically used for early music performances). Whether/how the strings are wound depends on the manufacturer, but flatwound strings are more commonly found on electric basses than orchestral double basses.
