Alot of this is related to un realistic expectations for children. Its unnatural to expect young kids to sit at a desk all day long . Children should learn by doing and be able to move around frequently throughout the day. There is not necessarily something wrong with these kids

Im the early 2000's, kids were being 'prescribed' these medications every time I turned my head. My oldest daughter was in 3rd grade and her teacher tried to push this on me. She took me outside of her classroom and told me it would be alright, that all 3 of her kids were on prescriptions. I firmly said NO. It had seemed so rampid that it made me cautious. Common sense told me that it was 'helping' teachers more than helping the kids

Dr. Phil, I do have ADHD. As a young child I could not sit still in class. I would constantly bang my desk with my heels. When the teacher asked me not to do that, I went to chewing my pencil. I had pencils so chewed up they became unusable. There was not an ADHD diagnosis yet. They didn't know what ADHD was. As I got older the impulsivity took over. I could be beaten and was, but it didn't stop the impulsive behavior and and never understood why I did some of the things that I did. I definitely had a learning disability as I couldn't concentrate or learn what was being taught. That didn't flip until I was 17 and the ADHD tuned more toward the ADD. I can remember trying to solve chemistry problem for 20 minutes straights. That was te first time I could keep my mind actively on anything for 20 minutes. I was in dancing classes from the time I was 9 until I 18. So, I was getting plenty of exercise. Diet was good not no sugar, as it was reserved for special occasions. then limited. I had a very hard time learning in the dance classes. When I was finely (by a neuropsychologist) tested for 2 hours and 30 minutes, (I tried to concentrate the best I could during that time) at the end of the test I had to copy a simple boat drawing. I couldn't keep my pencil still as I drew my hands were shaking so violently. Also the testing showed slow processing of information. As I understand it, my brain was taking in too much information at a time and that slowed down the processing of it. I was put on Adderall and it did help. I was taken off when my blood pressure was too high. I no longer take meds for the ADHD, we tried every drug possible and I had a great deal of agitation, so I no longer take a med for the ADHD. It is tough but I learned to live with it (the ADHD). It's nowhere near perfect. But that's okay. I will continue to live my life. I am married to a man understands me and helps me. So I will continue to be successful house wife.

Exactly. There are people who literally rely on these meds to have any quality of life, safely operate a car, etc. Some people's ADHD is nearly that bad. I take Adderall for all 3 reasons it's prescribed: daytime hypersomnia, treatment-resistant depression and ADHD. Take it away & I'll just go back to self-medicating like I did for decades. These crackdowns only hurt legit patients, for whom it's already insanely hard to obtain these meds.

As someone who has ADHD and is given a prescription for Vyvanse. After I take it, I feel like I could use a nap. I have a crash in the afternoon and it’s hard to stay awake… It helps me focus some, it helps me prioritize things… But the fact that people get this much energy from the medication shows that clearly they are not the people to be prescribed this medication. I think this also speaks pretty loudly about the education system and the emphasis that put on memorization of things when we literally have the Internet at our fingertips. I think it’s ridiculous. That standardized testing leads this many people to anxieties across-the-board.

I was put on Bi-Polar medication when I was 19 and for 8 years I battled it. Within the first 3 years of being on it, I had gotten a second opinion from another doctor and he told me that I was misdiagnosed due to grieving, ptsd from abuse and being bullied. The medication didn't agree with my brain chemistry and nearly killed me. I went through the mood swings, hallucinating, major aggression, depression and s**cidal reactions. It is no joke and thankfully after the last time I overdosed, I am now 7 years clean. It has been a major wake up call and I would never take another pill from a doctor or anyone ever again. So many people just trust their doctor without consideration and that can be very dangerous.

They tried me on all kinds of SSRI drugs for chronic depression and anxiety. None of them worked. One made me wake up crying every morning for no reason, it made the problem worse, there were more they tried me on as well, about everyone. The next new one was Cymbalta. After that got in my system I ended up taking almost a whole bottle with a 12 gauge shotgun loaded and cocked pointed at my chin. I must have slept like 2 days and thank God that gun didn’t go off and I woke up. I swore I would never take another one of those SSRI drugs again. My dr has me on benzos which have their drawbacks but never had any reaction like I did with the SSRI drugs. I guess people can call me an addict but I don’t care, I know what works with my body.

In Switzerland there was a park in the middle of a city with a strong financial sector where people were injecting themselves with heroin. A country where no one goes hungry, everyone gets a job and there is no fear of violence. Still, people are beaten down by addiction. This shows how powerless addiction makes us and how little we know about addiction. More science to understand addiction makes sense. We see addiction everywhere without us noticing it: behavioral addictions such as profit-seeking, gambling addiction, internet addiction, speed addiction, selfishness, relationship addiction, workaholism, stress addiction, shop lifting, attention addiction and dependence on herbal substances such as alcohol, heroin, tobacco and sugar. Schools should already have a subject on addiction for children in their early years. They should also learn to distinguish arguments in debates from simple assertions. This helps you deal with the problems in your life and not run away from them.

I was misdiagnosed with ADHD and prescribed Adderall for 20 years. It wasn’t until I visited Dr. Amen’s clinic and had a brain scan that I discovered the symptoms were actually caused by CPTSD. I believe Adderall was actually making my condition worse because it activates the body’s stress response, mimicking the physiological effects of being in fight-or-flight mode-symptoms that closely mirror those of CPTSD. On top of that, some generic forms are manufactured in China, and one of them landed me in the ER with AFIB. It’s an extremely dangerous and overprescribed medication, in my opinion.

More than half of everything that is wrong with us can be improved with proper nutrition and exercise. Doctors are trained to treat symptoms and hand out medication. Another problem is that what we are taught about nutrition isn’t true either. We have to take control of ourselves and do our own research.

I think there's more to the story than what the mom & dad shared here (although terribly sorry for their loss and my heart aches for them, all what ifs aside). Of course it is easy to get hooked on it. People can't even get out of bed without coffee/caffeine even. I've known some people to become a little duller/bland in their personality, but never "out of their mind" or badly aggressive while consistently using Adderall... Unlike its horribly worse "street" counterpart choices (coke & meth) that actually makes its users go insane. Self-discipline is what we all need to be better at. Not every itch needs scratched!!!! In other words... College kids, please calm down so there's no more shortages for us who can't actually function without it haha!! My prayers go out to anyone struggling though 110%. @@lightningmcqueen181 How people frame or explain their addiction to themselves and others is an individual thing. “Disease” dosent work for me either, but I’m not sure what the sense is to try to get those who are comfortable with that label, to give it up. As long as one realizes when they want something too much, it’s a problem which needs attention. Sometimes framing CD as a “disease” helps some people save face and hence makes the process of giving something up, more palatable. To others, it’s toxic. If you want to talk about the relevance of the “ Disease Model” and it’s practices, that’s a different conversation. I’ve been off heroin 50 plus years. If we had followed the medical advice (starting before he was able to understand his own feelings), we would have never known it was the meds making him aggressive and depressed. (This happened in Belgium btw)

❤ you did your son a great service. My mother allowed diagnosis at 5 for my brother and capitalized on the meds as a substitute for her meth addiction. In the US, in the 90s, she was handed this like it was candy. On welfare (state assistance), it was treated like handing over a bottle of water.

I took ADHD medication at a very young age. I would not eat anything throughout the day. I would lick my lips and be completely emotionless. I do not feel children should be prescribed medication.

I take Adderall, I was diagnosed with inattentive ADHD and it has been helping me for sure. But I am disgusted at how easy it was to get the diagnosis. (I have been able to stop taking my anti depressants since I started Adderall and that has been great, ) But I only had to take a 50 question "exam"

My brother was on retalin, and he became a zombie. My mom took him off after a week. Then he was prescribed dexamphetimine same thing and mom took him off that too. A psychiatrist paediatrician did a brain scan on him and found showing on a graph instead of it looking like this /\ it looked like this | ... that was the part of his brain that made decisions. So if a situation happened for eg something he didn't like, he reacted in a rage bc his brain couldn't think rashly, he'd just go off. He ended up in and out of prison.

Im sorry for their loss. But my Adderall saves me, It has prevented me from having nervous breakdowns and helped with my adhd . When i didnt use Adderall i ALMIST GOT INTO CAR wrecks because my adhd is serious but after given Adderall i was able to focus better. Adderall is the best makes my moods better too. Its not the drug but if doctors give without proof of adhd then its the doctors. I have proof from childhood on, and lived in a mental hospital for a time So for me there was solid evidence. But please dont mark Adderall its a real good medicine for those who truly need.

Addrall and other stimulents always hav been over prescribed I just watched a study many of the newer ones are causing symptoms of psychosis. Recently knew an 45 yo adult male who got Vyvanese " to lose weight " He eventually starting to abuse it. His mental health went downhill Many of the symptoms such as this man's son. He got weaned off from it but it will take time to recover I worked with younger men who was on stimulants as a kid and young teen They got caught off and went straight to meth. Stimulents have been around forever and destroyed a lot of livees. Look at all the anti anxiety meds such as Xanx as an example we put out drugs that cause addicitions.

I’m here to let you know that Adderall literally ruined my life! Everything you see and hear Britney doing, I can guarantee you it’s fueled by that. I was acting the same way and feeling invincible but also isolating myself. It got so bad it indeed turned into suicidal thoughts, attempts and psychosis. I was losing it during the middle of the day and hallucinating events that never took place but felt so real!! Only when someone would point out the lunacy of my story would it start to morph in my head and I’d realize it wasn’t real. I ended up losing everything - my job, my life (almost), my car, my friends, everything I ever owned in life. All gone. Hard to explain but this is an extremely dangerous drug! I do not recommend this for anyone and ESPECIALLY not your kids!!! 🙏🏻

I am very disappointed in Dr Phil here. Yes there is validity to people misusing and doctors mis-prescribing. However, ADHD is NOT a diet issue! It is a neurological issue that is measurable in the brain.

How many people who are prescribed adderall have been diagnosed through a brain scan? I was misdiagnosed with ADHD for 20 years until I went to Dr Amens.

I was diagnosed and asked for a brain scan in 2021 to make sure stimulants were the right choice.. they put me on something called guanafacine (an alpha 2 agonist) and vyvanse. Had a bad response to vyvanse so I switched to Clonidine and dexamphetamine. It’s listed as a neurodevelopmental disorder on my diagnosis sheet. (In conjunction to cptsd and Ednos, anxiety, depression & panic disorder).

Untrue. Diet plays a role in EVERYTHING. Maybe those who truly have ADHD or ADD won't respond that well to diet, but the misdiagnoses are more the problem. Doctors and our medical system suck!

Oh Jesus Dr. Phil... " IT'S SERIOUS! " ,ITS DANGEROUS"!..... Give me a break!!! MOTRIN IS DANGEROUS! " I F Y O U A B U S E I T !". ... I respect Dr. Phil but this is a bit overboard !... I am not trying to minimize this kids death but I'm a 45 year old veteran on ADDERALL. I take it as prescribed and it works perfectly fine for me... I'm also an ex addict so I know what drug abuse is.... You are demonizing the drug.. it's not the drug it's the person who abused it or the doctor that Pushes it... Proper diagnosis , and an honest Patient can benefit from the use of Adderall..... ... I DO AGREE, I do NOT like kids being prescribed it to early in life where hyper active gets confused with Add or ADHD.....

I agree 💯. I’m a veteran. Got out the military and have been going to school on the GI bill. Been prescribed Adderall a few years now. I take it as directed and have frequent doctor visits. It works great! I have none of these issues.

Melodramatic much ? Stop trying to fear monger about these to those who genuinely need them. How many times I take my rx 30mg dex a day and still fall asleep too early my tolerance ? This guy. Ever heard of adhd taking a stimulant and having a nap? Best sleeps ever. If you are concerned you rx Clonidine or guanafacine with melotonin at night to “wind down”also pharmacogenic testing helps

SHAME ON YOU! What you say is EXTREMELY HARMFUL to patients needing Adderall. My thoughts & actions are completely under control because of this drug. I take a small A.M. dose that enables me to drive safely, follow a recipe, converse & understand, etc. I’ve never needed my dose increased or had any problems especially when all RX stores in TX rules created a shortage by law. That lasted months. When I started Adderall my dosage was too strong & I fell asleep. 1/2 dose was all I required. My brain is different. 20+ yrs ago I had 1 puff of weed & so much pacing anxiety I was terrified. SO MANY harsh drugs on the streets and you select Adderall to address???? Many need it and the rest are spoiled brats, undisciplined or using it as speed.

Good for you, but people who don't need it are being prescribed. It's killing those people. You sound mad. You sound like you are on adderall. 😢Btw my dad was one of them. Im glad, Dr. Phil is doing this. Wake people up to bad pharma. Killing people 😢

My psychiatrist does 2 minute med checks each monrh but collects payment from my insurance company for 15 minutes of med checks each month. Guese he can't find anything else to talk about after a few minutes. lol At least I am an informed patient and can make decisions for myself. I can't imagine the abuse that occurs due to the undereducated or misinforned folks.
