The left hand: order, discipline, focus. The right hand: Chaos, creativity, play

Great observation.

Mmmh I wouldn’t call that chaos, with that much discipline and focus in the right hand - simply that discipline and focus allows for supple breathing ;)

The whole setting, the full moon behind the piano, the beautiful kimono with a delicate rose pattern, all this makes this piece of music even more forceful, impressive, haunting. Sublime.

What a gorgeous piece of music. Two major highlights of 2015 that I was patiently awaiting throughout 2014 were (1) NASA/New Horizons' up-close photos of the Pluto system and (2) the release of Philip Glass' complete Piano Etudes. The background for Etude 14 is certainly appropriate; it's probably the moon (?) but I can almost make out Pluto's "heart" toward the bottom right.

The costuming is completely unnecessary and a little offensive, and just cheapens an already lurid composition even further.

@@TJMalana indeed. Imagine having this opinion. Ridiculous.

Your opinion on the pianist's outfit is noted, but I do not fathom how you think the composition itself is "lurid". Certainly it is colorful, and pits the left hand order against the right hand playfulness. It rises and falls, climbing to climaxes and taking breaths. But "lurid"? Maybe you'd prefer downloading a few 101 Strings albums instead. In 2013, Maki Namekawa performed the world premiere of the entire cycle of Philip Glass’ 20 etudes for piano solo at Perth International Arts Festival under the supervision of Glass himself.
