I've never had a semi-religious experience with the help of a MIDI program. I'm having flashes of the movie pop up in my mind. Phillip Glass' soundtrack, Ron Fricke's cinematography, and Godrey Reggio's thematic vision build a film that is more like a holy experience for me than a simple film.

What a titanic labor, rendering this entire score for midi! After four decades of listening to Glass evolve, this remains my #1 favorite of his works. It combines the hypnotic drive of the early works with the harmonic inventiveness of the later. And of course it has a profoundly deep subtext. Always wished someone would do a ballet to this music.

Wife is out of town. I’m blasting the midi version of Koyaanisqatsi. I love it. The colorization on the keyboards and notes is beautiful. The Grid is amazing. I also say without sarcasm, it makes me appreciate hearing it performed with humans. See it live if you can.

I saw this in the theater when it came out, then saw it again. It left me with a deep sense of calm and acceptance about the inevitable price we humans would pay. I listen to it now, decades later, and see we are about to find out. Still, this music with it's deep and somber chorus is welcome and fitting.

The coloratura style is what I'm talking about, where multiple notes come from one syllabic sound. its hard to emulate that on Vessels because it wants to play it staccato instead of slurring the notes together. That's my only complaint on this rendition and its not anyone's fault - this version is still totally badass. It helps me learn the notes for this masterpiece.

Thank you very much for the tremendous work that must have gone into making this video. Many tracks heard here are not on the original KOY soundtrack. I have always been particularly interested in the early scenes in KOY of nature, mostly shot in Monument Valley. The soundtrack begins with a single note repeated...then moves to two then three and becomes increasingly complex. This perfectly leads the viewer/listener into the transition to the complex world of humans that is coming up. Those scene evoke a creation myth such as Genisis or the other ones you can find in Glass' Symphony #5 "Requiem, Bardo, Nirmanakaya"

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts. I follow Philip glass since 1982, since I was in my teenage days, but I did not realized that other works wre inspired for this work in particular, such as you mentioned, Tron, I guess that is why I liked. Certainly the works of Philip Glass are disruptive. Despite some of their minimalistic works in early stages, he is becoming more ecclectic. Thanks so much as well for giving the info about the meaning of the tittle, I guess we are near of those Hopi profecies :(. Thanks!.

Someone I know described the main theme as "the stark bleached bones of Bach." Which I totally get. A lot of Bach devices distilled to the bare minimum. The main theme sounds a little like a variation of the Fugue in G Minor, extremely simplified. Bach is definitely NOT minimalist, and I don't think that Glass was copying Bach, but I think there is subconscious influence from this Fugue and other Bach works. Koyaanisqatsi is even in the key of G Minor and uses an organ, and has four voices making a very simple sort-of fugue. Hm, I looked for a video of the G Minor fugue and found one with graphics kind of like this video. kzbin.info/www/bejne/mpXFqXmfaJKIhZY Check out the Passacaglia in C Minor too. kzbin.info/www/bejne/Z5LXgnmCjsetq80

I loved this, but during the the 2 note ostinato towards the beginning of "The Grid" (at 44:24) the upper note goes from a C to a C# (or a D flat) for the two progressions when the three muted trumpets join before the chord progression changes to the definitive "The Grid" three chord "unanswered progression". You notated them all as C naturals and you are INCORRECT for having done so; I'll repeat: they change to C#s (or D flats) Having said that: Nice job. I found it mesmerizing.

Street Signs after Prophecies from Koyaanisqatsi Soundtrack Who respects the humble street sign which exists only to mark, for the sake of some passing traveler, the name of the street being crossed or traveled? Its cyclopian expression of self stands lugubriously like the blind waiting to cross busy corners. Void stare, single declarative certainty; thin interruption of empty; descendant of holy cairn where someone once knelt in joy at having been found. Who comes late in the night to straighten it, to hammer its dings and erase its graffiti? Who brushes the foliage and branches from its coma? I dreamed once that all the street signs had been sorted into a hopeless jumble. Purple micro dot blossomed in the orchards. Still no one noticed. In the silence that breathed beneath the coffins; in the graveyard, Phillip Glass played and the cold bones vibrated their one tune harmoniously at the end of all roads where rust eats the metal and its name droops or flakes or becomes defaced and once again, one thing means another. So here we can see the method to the madness...!!! Great score. I have been into Musique Concrète since the score to Forbidden Planet. It seems to be the basis for many styles of experimental music. I have been a synthesist for years, using tape loops and recorded sounds early on. Finally got an Arp Odyssey in the early 80's, then a Moog Rogue, now a Kurzweil K2000. For percussion I use chimps on bongos. I have several parrots that sing background. I was a vocalist in rock bands for years. Now I mainly write commentary and social critique on the Internet. \\][//
