The life story of painter Philip Guston serves as both a cautionary tale about the group think of the establishment art world, and as an inspirational example of the triumph of artistic integrity - especially when it challenges a stale status quo. Exposure to real art enriches life.

I worked as McKee Gallery’s art handler for over 17 years and we represented guston exclusively since 1973 . I’ve handled and framed and even repaired almost all of those paintings. The early works like Mother and Child and the children in the street are owned by guston’s daughter Musa Mayer. They hang in the hallway if her apartment. You open the front door and you’re greeted with mother and child right at the door. Striking when I first saw it. Glad you enjoyed the show , I’ve lived with these terrific paintings for many years. It’s good to see them through a new admirer’s eyes.

Thanks for sharing, what an exciting profession to experience. Did you ever get to meet Guston in person?

@@symbolmaker no, he died when I was 12. I know a lot of his friends and I’ve been to his studio in Woodstock many times but I didn’t start working with David McKee until I was almost 30. David shared many stories of his time with Guston with me.

I haven't yet grown to appreciate this phase of Guston's work. It pleased him I get that. But it is ham fisted and ugly. I understand that Abstraction is a faded language. But when it is beautifully painted and a joy to be near give me his more elegant abstract painting.

If R. Crumb had been a postmodernist abstract painter he would have been P. Guston.
