Futurist and inventor Philip Rosedale is a advisor to generative AI companies and an internet pioneer. Dan Patterson interviewed Rosedale about the path where ChatGPT and the latest advances in AI are leading humanity. Rosedale talks about how these technologies are powerful enough to enable new ways for humans to hurt each other but isn't smart enough to help us avoid the worst scenarios.
He talks about how we might think of these systems like discovering an alien intelligence. He talks about the limits of ChatGPT and other conversational AI systems. And, he explains how these systems will enable superhuman powers in anything in almost anything that can be quantified. He adds, "We have shockingly little ability to predict what happens next."

Good to see Dan Patterson here at ZDNet still, given that he's not with CNET now. Would be great to have more interviews like this, about different topics in tech that impact companies and organizations at all levels (cyberscurity, Blockchain, remote work, AI, etc.)

I want to notice that most people will think of A.I. as something in a movie. Forget that! I had people during the 80s thinking personal computers will rob their money in a bank. Did not happen. Sadly, we will never have an R2D2, C3PO, Commander Data, etc., but evolving technical tools have already changed our lives. If we read more than watch too many television/movies, we might fear less of the wonders that await us.

I think Fireship has the best take on this as it stands right now. Generative AI will be great to automate the creation of boilerplate script to do things that we already know how to do. It will save time doing basic or repetitive programming tasks. What it is not good at is working with systems, particularly complex ones that are basically what engineers are trained to actually do within a company. You also have to guard against it "hallucinating" when it doesn't actually know what it's talking about. It's just not trustworthy enough to operate beyond human interaction...yet, for many/most tasks. Like Rosedale said, though, it can give you great starting points, though. I see this as mostly a productivity tool *at present.* Who knows what it will be like in the future, though. It also can't actually "think" (contrary to Rosedale) nor can it think *critically.* That's where your skills are going to need to be. Do you know how to leverage generative AI to accomplish tasks? It's a tool.

Giving people free money will kill the motivation of poor people and just increase house prices for everybody - we don't need basic income, we need a right to basic housing. House prices are destroying our societies not income inequality.
