You're welcome! I'm glad to hear that I've given you a good excuse to explore Roth's work. If you're new to his work, I recommend starting with "American Pastoral" or "The Human Stain." Whatever you decide to read, I hope you have a great time exploring Roth's work and that you find something that speaks to you and engages your interests.

You know, I've never read a Roth novel, although I probably really need to. I actually not too long ago caught the Ewan McGregor film adaptation of this book on tv, but I couldn't really get into it. I've heard such polarizing things about Roth, I'm not really sure whether he's up my alley or not. But if I do read one of his books, I'll probably go with either this one or Sabbath's Theater, cuz I've heard that one might be his magnum opus. Anyway, great vid! :)

Thank you for your message! Please don't let a mediocre movie adaptation put you off reading a great novel. I can understand why you might be hesitant to dive into his novels, given the polarizing opinions about his writing. If you do decide to give Roth a try, both "American Pastoral" and "Sabbath's Theater" would be great places to start.

Fascinating that you would recommend Franzen with Roth. The Corrections came out around the same time, I believe. I didn’t realize Roth was so prolific, I might have to go to the beginning of his catalog. I do see you have the latest Franzen, I can’t wait for your review. I will say that although I did like the book his writing hasn’t been the same since David Foster Wallace died. I feel with his direct peer competition gone his zest has diminished… I might be wrong…

It wasn't "American Pastoral" that came at the same time as "The Corrections" by Jonathan Franzen. It was "The Human Stain" also by Philip Roth. Both were published in 2001. I read Franzen's latest novel, "Crossroads", earlier this year. There's a video about it here on my channel if you'd like to check it out.

I just read the novel (Brazilian- Cia das Letras version) I appreciated your video very much! I can even link it to nowadays and the Gaza-Israeli tragedy. What would Roth think about students invasion to Columbia University. 🤨

Yes, yes, yes to one of my favorite writers, although I am not too fond of some of his works and have twice stopped "Sabbath's Theater " at the halfway point. I believe this might be because I am a woman and don't fully grasp some of his sex obsessed male characters. I am not fond of the older male/younger female dynamic he liked to play with either. His last very short novels were gems. I would praise many of his novels, but American Pastoral is my favorite. I always feel an ache when I read it. Levov 's dilemma is like one I think of about my America. How can you love her, defend her, support her when she does things that are inexplicable to you.? Anyway, thank you for bringing Roth to your subscribers.

I'm glad you enjoyed my video! The idea was to do something that fans of Roth's work (or of American Pastoral) would enjoy while also appealing to people who have never read the novel or anything by him and encouraging them to pick it up. I hadn't thought about Levov's dilemma in terms of loving one's country, but it makes sense. After all, if we love someone (or something), we love them with their flaws and complexities.
