I used to watch this guy at Grossman's Tavern in Toronto every Tuesday night back in 2001. A virtuoso blues player, for sure. I remember Jeff Healey coming in to see him one night. Sayce was playing mostly Hendrix tunes back then, and sounding very much like SRV. He's getting even more interesting sounds out of his guitar these days, and he's developed some seriously high-speed licks too.

There's guys in clubs all over the world that play this guy under the table. They do it by actually playing musical, meaningful phrases, and not just crazy over bends and ultra wide vibrato, which obviously impresses the shit out of your average person that doesn't play the guitar, but those of us who play blues, know Phil's game. He's all icing and no cake.

He's incredible, but he's stuck on SRV, as are many. Fantastic guitarists leave a legacy like that, and it's great, but ultimately if all you are is cloning someone else, that void is pretty much infinitely filled by the person you're copying. You have to take it another direction, like John Mayer has. He's very much learned to become his own player, and is furthermore a very advanced songwriter (Not doing just straight blues, which is great, but won't earn you a crowd outside of people who are into blues).

“Don’t fear the buzz” should be his motto. Not many musicians can pull off playing through that noise. SRV would be proud.

What an absolute beast player. The chops, the tone, the vocals.. The band ain't half bad, either. Definitely among top 5 blues players in the world today, in my opinion.

Totally agree. I always feel like he is the Gary Moore in Strat world. And Gary is genius with a Less Paul. Not Many can emulate this guy tone and techniques.

Love this video, in your face, small intimate bar gig. Killer guitar playing, digging that raw Strat sound he has. I'm a guitar player and never have been able to make a Strat sound good to me; i'm immediately jealous of anybody who can get make one sound so good! Well done Phillip!

Clapton had this power when he was with cream and Marshall full stacks. He kinda lost that fire when he set the gibsons and the Marshalls down and went to the strat. Just my opinion.

SRV's audience is old and tired now. Phil needs his own style. He's been using Stevie's for decades. THat's why he's playing small clubs for drunk people.
