Phil's vibrato fits the blues in weird but refreshing way. I like this jam! It's pretty cool.

Excellent! Nice to see Phill Collen out of his comfort zone and do something different. His endless smile throughout the song looked like he was almost apologetic for playing the blues or that he was sharing the stage with a true blues technician. But whatever it is that caused him to blush he sure proved his worth. I am sure that, like most guitarists, Collen has been playing the blues with his guitar. Thanks that was refreshing.

Philip is the MAN! Poor Phil Collen, way out of his element here. His tone is sh*t too. I love the way Philip confidently waits his turn and hosts it like a real blues jam leader, then just let's loose with the real deal chops! You can tell Phil Collen doesn't jam much or improvise, he ends every phrase with a neck slide, because, you know, what else would you do! Philip Sayce actually plays very understated here and even let's Phil step all over the song.

I think Phil did great man. Excellent actually as he really took the blues and made it his own. Everyone has their own style and Phil did a great job at improvising.

Is it cruel that I think this was a genius plan from Sayce? He subliminally set Phil up. Like here is a basic major blues progression you can use both major and minor pentatonic scales in to solo...lets see if you know how to alternate between the two...not so much lol. Sayce deserves to be a household name in blues and rock music. He's not a sell out and never will be and I think that is the only reason he isn't very well known.

I actually think PC does a pretty good job, other than the wheedily bits. He plays with nice restraint for the most part.

That ain't restraint, it's not knowing the fundamentals.
@raymondlugo9960

@@wesleybarrilleaux9640 Phil's a bit wheedily in this context. I'd probably be the same. Which fundamentals are you talking about? He's got the key, scale, rhythm... Aren't those the fundamentals? Sometimes "space" is a hard time to find when you're put on the spot. I saw Phil once outside of DL and I was surprised how good he is.

@StoneRun Its not fair to compare players, everybody has their own way to speak. Philip Sayce is a blues-MONSTER, he would have played anyone off the stage, when it comes to blues...... Phil aint playin bad either, but this is Sayces arena.

I think the big issue is the different guitar tones each player has! Collen is a bit more hard rock with a delay wash & Sayce is obviously more blues with a reverb splash... A good mix...

Know who won?? Phil Collen! Because during the course of that 8:07, he made enough in royalties from DL tunes to buy Philip Sayce as a house boy for a week. But regardless, I remember talking to Phil Collen after that and I brought this up, he looked sheepish, and said something about it was the first time he played that signature guitar of his. Not to mention, his sound and tone and playing style isn't set up for blues. Throw Sayce in an arena with that setup he has and listen to him do 80 pop metal and Def Leppard tunes. He would be just as disappointing as PC is here. Its context, so, I don't look down on Collen at all with this, and I actually give him props for maintaining himself in a pretty foreign territory with an unfamiliar setup. If I was Sayce, I would have picked an easier song, or went a little easier in my playing as to not further make Collen feel like an asshat, but perhaps its not that type of mindset at the time. And one thing I noticed, Collens music and setup is geared towards volume pedals and boosts, and less using the volume knob on the guitar for volume, so I'm positive that's why he seemed to step all over. He was simply in unfamiliar territory and seeing his good nature about it makes me respect him. I wonder how Yngwie would act. In conclusion, Phil Sayce wins the song - Phil Collen's bank account wins life. haha I'm a huge Sayce fan anyways!

You said throw him in on 80s rock and he's be lost. But there's a video online where he plays Bon Jovi songs with Melissa Etheridge and when it's over Bon Jovi is talking and says something to effect of " great job Melissa and Phillip Sayce. I was sitting here in audience watching and said " holy fuck. Who the fuck is that guitar player!!?" So great job Phillip!"

Can't disagree more with that, I think Philip (Sayce we 're talking about here, not Phil Collen) really plays with taste and restraint when it's called for, but can let it rip when necessary too. Check out Alchemy if you want to hear and see true tasteful, well-placed notes. Almost nothing compares to that, and in the catalog of musical greatness, it's up there with Lenny, Little Wing, Riviera Paradise, and Tin Pan Alley

The blues is musical truth serum. Phil had a pretty good tone going, but had he concentrated more on the feel and not the flash, he would have had a better showing. But like everyone else, it's just my opinion. Either way, they're both great players.

@KayserStaffay Joe is more controlled these days - Was a different story 10 years ago though. There's plenty of early JB stuff around to check, but he made a conscious decsion to slow down from the million mph stuff and be more selective. Checkout the jams with Walter Trout !

for the most part, im ok with collen's playing here. I much prefer philip and personally think he got smoked but you know that's just my opinion. the real problem is collen is playing all over philip's vocals. if you're a professional musician you HAVE to know better than that. jeez.

@bandslater Joe speaks with a different voice, I love him as well. But he's a much more controlled player. Philip has this outrageous output on stage that I sometimes miss with Bonamassa. He tends to play nearly exactly the same as on the records live. Record-wise, I must say that I prefer Joe though. Philips output isn't that great on record. But as I said - its not fair to compare musicians, its about personal taste.

Never been anything resembling a blues guitarist?! I agree with most of what you said but I gotta disagree with you there. Philip's roots always have been blues. He came up in clubs in Toronto playing blues. He played all over the world with Jeff Healey. His biggest influence is Stevie. Maybe our definition's of "blues guitarist" are just different.

I know PC is out of his element, but this should serve as a bit of a lesson to young guitarists. There are guitarists who can weedly, weedly with the gain on 11, then there are *musicians* who can sort their way through most musical environments without looking like the fish out of water. It's a sad commentary that after all these years, PC doesn't know the fundamentals of a blues progression. Starting at 5:05 when it's his turn to play backing guitar, he doesn't play a single chord, and looks totally lost. Again, I'm not suggesting he needs to be a pro, but after 35+ yrs... he should be above a novice, even in a genre outside of the 80 rock scene. I mean... It's the blues... The most common genre at any jam!

hey man i´m sorry to disagree with you, but theres a sort of a crisis right now in the music world and that´s because musicians and players are not trying find their own voice, for example in the blues the last huge thing that happened was SRV and it´s been like 20 years or more that nothing new comes out... that´s a crisis to me... every art form is doomed if we lose the sense of originality....
