He had the passion and he learned how to harness it. He wasn't just talented, he had discipline. That's why he had the reputation that he had. He earned it. A true inspiration.

I love how he takes the time to gather his thoughts correctly; he is really trying to give meaningful advice. Find your passion and do it every single day. Do not let one opportunity pass you by. This is the mindset that leads to success. People do not understand how short life is and this is a man who yes died quite early in his 40s however he lived a full life in that time. He studied and mastered his craft. Most people live twice as long and don’t achieve their hearts desire. Don’t be like most people. Put in the work and it will happen. It’s your choice. I guarantee in 40 years you will not want to look back and think about all the time you spent sleeping your days away. You owe it to yourself. Fear leads to missed opportunities which leads to regret. If anyone reads this just know that the time is now. Your time is now. What are you waiting for? The world needs you.

Without question, this is the finest comment I have ever read on KZbin. I'm going to cut and paste your comment, Brandon. I've never done that before. Hey listen, I'm a writer. It's 7:30 in the morning. An hour from now I will walk to a cafe, sit down, maybe get given a free coffee, and I will write. This is my routine. People ask me if my stories have ever been published. No, they have not. Being published is not important. Being good is what matters. I want to be good. In only six months I can see my writing has improved. My writing is going places, Brandon, and I'm going with it. "Find what you love and let it kill you." - Charles Bukowski.

We’ve lost some great actors to tragedy but I think Philip Seymour Hoffman is the one whose absence is most tangible- I really want to see him do more movies because he never once did a bad performance and maybe that’s because he took the advice given here. I would love to have seen him do more, just more. He is so good in Charlie Wilson’s War, Boogie Nights, Mission Impossible 3 etc. Really solid work. A shame he left us.

Watched Moneyball recently. He's got a pretty minor role in it - just a simple obstacle to the goal of Pitt's protagonist - and it would have been so tempting to overplay it, to be greedy for the spotlight. Not this guy. Nothing showy. Everything he does is appropriate to the character. And he completely nails it. EDIT: I admit I'm not familiar with the real people the story was based on so I don't know how much he resembles the person he was playing. I just felt that, as far as the way he played this character, he was very convincing.

A few other folks have said it here and I agree...this is the best advice for getting on in life in general. If you do your very best in whatever chance you get, you don't necessarily guarantee anything, but you DO dramatically increase your chances of getting to where you want to be. Because your next big opportunity may not appear to be that at the time, but it might just be the one.

All good advice has been said before. What I've learned is that a lot of different people will comprehend a piece of advice, one that they might have heard a thousand times, only when it's phrased in a particular way. That's why if you're learning to, say, draw, you look up many different videos of the same techniques, by different people, because different artists will explain it in different ways, and change, sometimes subtly, the practices used to improve those techniques. Eventually you'll find one that, as they say, _resonates_ with you.

Truth. Capitalize as hard as you can on the opportunities that present themselves no matter what you are into doing. Don’t sit around doing nothing waiting for things to happen. Getting out and doing anything of any scale increases the amount of opportunities you encounter. Connect with people where the respect is mutual. Keep consistent about doing what you say you’ll do amongst those people and those are the building blocks. The more solid connections you make, the more opportunities will present themselves. I think this type of advice is for those people who aren't truly passionate and talented with their supposed craft. It's like the people who want to be musicians but don't want to put in the time & effort regardless of who their audience is or isn't. Putting in that work because you absolutely love it and that's all you want to do. That will absolutely translate into those small moments like an audition because you are dying to communicate that passion with everybody & anybody.

my grandfather told me a similar thing when i was a teenager, though it was about life in general. he told me that no matter what job you are doing, even if you dont like the job, do it right. its always about giving it 100%, no matter what. i've done my best over the last 30+ yrs to live up to that advice

Yes. That wisdom applies to more than acting or even fixing cars; more than any profession that exists. It applies to the character of a person. It is sobering to measure one’s self against who one could be. The work seems daunting, but exceedingly beneficial.

This is the advice they should be sharing. Some of you out there (including this writer and vlogger) have the artist aspiration. You have been told by the very few who made it to believe in yourself and never give up. Well the simply fact is the arts are very different than any other profession. Because usually--someone else has to let you in. Now what I would tell you if you are 18 or 40 and feel that your destiny is in the arts? I would not tell you to just stay the "safe route" and give up on your dreams. I would tell you to pursue the artist aspiration smartly. Get another trade that you at least like. So the agents of industry never have you by the throat. You have to go to work anyway so you might as well have the job that pays well. I never went through the starving artist phase. I went through a starving student phase. So when I finally did pursue the artist endeavor I did it with a job I also like that contracts for 100K a year and four month vacations in Europe. That's how you go through being a starving artist. You don't starve at all. Hope this helps someone---Charles
