The full title of the work is "The Countess of Pembroke's Arcadia," as it was dedicated to Sidney's sister, Mary Herbert, the Countess of Pembroke. The book was written around 1580 but was not published until 1590, after Sidney's death. It gained popularity in the following decades and became one of the most widely read works of its time.

During his travels in Europe, Sidney developed connections with many powerful and important politicians and intellectuals. He was not just a courtier, but had wide-ranging intellectual and artistic interests, discussed art with the painter Nicholas Hilliard and chemistry with the scientist John Dee.
