I just want a remind everyone that Amanda Bynes was one of the first former actresses to be vocal about Dan Schneider, accusing him of SA and such. No one listened. They shrugged it off as her having a mental breakdown(ignoring the years of trauma is likely what CAUSED it)

I remember walking into geography class and somebody had found a pamphlet about Female Circumcision that was left from the previous class. Being an all boys school, a bunch of us laughed, until our teacher came in, saw the pamphlet and began to explain to us exactly what Female Circumcision was and how horrific it is. I’ll never forget that lesson and it’s devastating to hear some country want to make it legal again

FGM victim here, done under the guise of cultural tradition and religion. It caused me heap of trauma and health problems I do not think will ever be fixed. What’s ironic is one of the reasons people want to do FGM is to ‘curb women’s sexual appetite’ but then you’ll see almost all of them complain that their SO are ‘frigid’ and ‘sexually inactive’. It’s ridiculous and has nothing to do with religion, this as always throughout history was a way to demean and control women, and these men do not want to let go of that control.

I am sorry that you had to deal with that, this is my first time hearing of this and it's just (I honestly can not put my feelings into words) fucked up. It is sad religion has been used throughout history to benefit and keep the people in power when It should be something to better the loves of people not do them harm. I also can not understand how people can argue something is part of their religion when it is not in the doctrine that said religion follows. I am not a religious person at all however I try to be a good person that I can be proud of looking back on life when it is my time to leave life behind. One final thought, if there is a God out there and we are products of him like he created us or thought us into existence wouldn't we be beautiful in their eyes so I feel it would be more of an affront to them to mutilate said creation(I also think if there were a God that they wouldn't mind us doing things to our own. Bodies like tattoos or piercing as a form of self expression) so wouldn't the people doing these unspeakable things to keep a part of the population down really be the evil in the eyes of said god? I was raised Christian and had a horrible grandma who always talked about everyone else who was doing wrong and judging them and was overly religious and was sure she would go to heaven but if there is a heaven and he'll she is most definitely in hell because she was a terrible human being she was racist who married a man who was mixed race and would use the n word and other slurs for every other spin color than her own, she was homophobic yet she left her husband a few times to run off with her lesbian partner and my mom remembers the lady always being around for everything during her childhood, and the worst of all she never accepted all of the horrible things she did and what a terrible person she was until it affected her personal life and the day her first born grandchild(me) which was apperently some big thing for her culture or something told her that she was no longer part of his life and that she would never hear from me again which she never did although she sent a letter apology for all the things she did wrong to me but also not a single word of remorse for all the other horrible things she did and i did go to her funeral but that was for my moms sake not hers and i still have the letter but i read it to remind myself of what not to be. Again I am sorry that you and others have to deal with stuff like this I hop one day that practices like this are all banned. I wouldn't go as far to say religions should be banned because i believe that they do benefit a lot of people and cause less fear of the unknown but at the same time many religions need an update on thier views on women and gay rights and other things and just accept we are all humans and should all be working for the betterment of humankind together not hating one another or working for our own self interest, imagine if we had a world like that where we all were willing to lend a hand to someone in need or share in the excess food/wealth/medical knowledge that many countries have with other countries that dont live in an area where they can grow everything they need from the land they have. Sorry for the long rant but i think that if any of the founders of the religions were to see where they are at and how followers of these religions act they would all be horrified.

It's sadly a culture of fiending for success that also drives this. I worked for a digital radio station in Hollywood as a data analyst in the early 2010's. When I was there I met a radio programmer who was in charge of a couple of less popular genres and he would often bring his 15 year old daughter with him to work. She was supposedly homeschooled and the dad did this so that she could network with other people. By herself. She was a model. When I asked him what it was like trying to help make a career for her he very casually said "we are on our third agent right now because the first one fell in love with her and the second one tried to stalk her and send her naughty pics". It's like he never thought about just saying "fck it Im getting my kid out of this" but instead had no issue brushing off the very obvious trauma she had gone through in order to get her to the next level. I felt so bad for this girl and it made me want to beat the sht out of her dad, but I couldn't because I would risk losing my job.

My classroom floor tiles were broken for the first 6 months of this school year, and it didn’t get fixed until we sent administrators an article about the particles being harmful and potentially cancerous. The school has broken pieces everywhere. Turns out every building in the district has them as well. We are a broke inner-city district, so it is not at the top of their priority list. When you google it though, it’s clearly common. Your average American public school has asbestos in the floors and ceilings as well. Give us modern buildings please! So I’m from Sudan (90-98% females with FGM/C) and my mom once told me a story of how her mom, my grandma, had to trick her husband into believing the procedure was done. She took them to the doctor and everything but had them fake the procedure being done so that my mother and her sister would not have to experience that pain. This is obviously a wild story to me, displaying the contrast in my upbringing in the US and hers in Sudan. I think it’s so scary that the ban might be repealed, because it will only further aggravate the issue that these innocent women and girls are facing. It has its ties to the Muslim religion, but in my opinion it is a complete misinterpretation of the Quran, rather a horrific societal standard that must be unlearned over time.

I was a costumer in 2010 on the Nickelodeon show The Troop. The lead actress was a 16 year old girl, and directors, crew, and even her on set tutors would make backhanded comments about her food choices on set. Like she shouldn’t eat noodles or soup, just salad, etc. I was disgusted, she was only 16, and I was 21, not much older than her. One of the other leads was fired for inappropriate sexual contact with a minor. Not sure if it was this girl, but he was gone either way. Anyways, behaviour like this and diva outbursts and constant fear of being fired over any little thing made me quit the industry entirely. Film is extremely toxic, especially for young people.

The FGM story is so tragic because how engrained it is in some cultures. In 2021 I worked in a hospital and one night as I was covering the break of our Switchboard operator received a phone call from a woman asking about how to get an appointment to schedule her daughter's "female circumcision". I was so confused because I'd never heard it called that and it took me a bit to realize what she talking about. She said she had spoken to her family doctor who told her to call the local hospital and inquire. I told her that wasn't something done at all and that it was illegal in Canada. Before I could get more information she hung up because I spooked her. I recorded the number she called from and reported it to my supervisors. Hopefully the police got involved to save that poor daughter but the nonchalant way she spoke about the literal mutilation of her daughter completely caught me off guard.

Jesus this was definitely one of the more depressing and difficult to watch episodes of PDS I’ve ever seen. Child abuse, pedophilia, a person amputating their legs for the sake of money, a crazy politician who may be the first stepping stone to a revitalization of fascism in this country and even the reversal of FGM? Something that anyone with common sense knows is horrific and there can be no excuse for such things. Through it all I’m reminded of that clip of Ned’s Declassified guys making jokes about a tragedy. That’s what the world is now. That’s what we’ve let it become. A spectacle we crack jokes about and farm for content while all around us the boat is on fire and continues to sink. Yeah it was all so bad... The worst was the FGM though, because I ALSO found out that is NOT EVEN THE WORST of what's going on over there. Partner was stationed around the region and will not tell me everything, but "occasional child sacrifice" was mentioned and I can't even. The fact that its 2024 and ANYONE is discussing EITHER FGM or MGM as if its acceptable to do... I'm so filled with rage and disgust I can't even. Had to just stop the video and go to comments to see if ANYONE else was this upset at the idea of 10-15 year old girls being literally mutil@ted for the sake of some prehistoric dumbazz beliefs. I can't. It's so awful I literally regret being born into this race at all and hope after I eventually pass that I will be either yeeted into nothingness or else be made into a bird or some sort of bug so I can just dodge whatever other nastiness humanity is going to come up with or perpetuate next. I've just plain lost hope. We can't even protect women and girls from harmful policies IN HOUSE what is to even be done for these children of any genders elsewhere in the world that are being ab*sed and disfigured over some old dude's stupid fantasies about a greater power. The amount of fked up in today's episode... I'm dying. What even is reality, what are we as a species, WHY is this even a thing? The amount of hate and fear some cultures have for women is so incredibly disgusting and confusing I just can't process it... It's even more upsetting that I had to scroll so far down top comments before I found one that even MENTIONED the FGM story and how heinous it actually is. The pred. stuff with Nick and the docu is bad, but the FGM and Gambia is even worse, I was expecting to see floods of comments at least mentioning just how disgusting that is... This has been a horrifying timeline to live through as a woman. Roe v. Wade being struck down, countries considering FGM to be an okay and potentially necessary thing to do, and a Governor hopeful stating he believes that women should not vote. Our rights are constantly and actively under siege. For a long time I didn’t vote because I saw the two parties as two sides of the same coin, and apparently got too comfortable. Now I vote every chance I get if only to dissent against the party actively trying to take my rights away.

Concerning the sheep story. I discussed it with my wife, an animal scientist with emphasis on sheep and goats (a legitimate sheep expert). We live in Northern Utah, just half an hour away from Idaho and 4 houra away from Yellowstone. This scares us. We dont farm or ranch, but our community survives on that. Remember all the regulations due to the Mad Cow disease? Well, what if these illegal sheep parts contain viruses and illnesses that the local livestock, pets, and wild animals cannot defend themselves against? If these experimental sheep get out, they can spread disease to my community in just a few years! That means that the price of beef skyrockets, as well as dairy products. Farmers and ranchers not making ends meet, and the smaller ones that work for themselves can lose the ranches their grandfathers started. This also heavily affects the wild animal population, besides possible disease. Are they going to compete with elk and deer for the resources needed to survive? Are predators going to be enough to keep the population in check, or will the sheep take over the wildlife in the area? I know that to many people it's a silly story and situation, but to my wife, a real sheep scientist, and all those of us that are even close-ish to Montana, it is a real issue. Thank you for covering this, Phill. Let me know if you or your team wants to talk to my wife about it further. We could even get you in contact with her sheep and goat professor. He's one of the world's leading experts on sheep.

The genital mutilation story gave me an anxiety attack as it was happening. I’m a Nigerian woman and I’m so grateful my parents (medical professionals) never did that to me, however, I’ve met so many women who weren’t as lucky as me. I honestly didn’t know it happened in Nigeria and it still does to this day. It’s extremely painful and traumatizing, and worst of all, COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. Putting women through a painful procedure that does absolutely nothing due to archaic cultural and religious beliefs and the people spearheading this will NEVER know what it feels like because they’re men. Why are men (some) always trying to police women’s bodies??

Watching that Nickelodeon documentary left me devastated. I grew up with a single mom who worked relentlessly to provide for us and that left us to entertain ourselves most of my childhood. As a result, I would watch a lot of tv - Nickelodeon being my favorite in the 90s. To know how those children suffered while making the shows I grew up on and loved leaves me gutted. There's also this sense of betrayal for us as the audience, that these sick adults got us watching all these nasty jokes/scenes and me being a clueless kid was none-the-wiser. Its hard to put all of the feelings I have into words, there's just so much.

Watched the “quite on set” and my mouth just dropped. I Went to the Gow School in the 90’s, had great teachers, and friends. once graduated, I found out later down the road that a friend of mine got sexually abused by one of the teachers. The teacher hid it insanely well. Once we all found out we never joked about it. We didn’t get traumatized, but a few did from this teacher. The declassified kids, who joked about it on tiktok, Who still act like kids, are disgusting and its mind boggling that they didn’t spread Awareness or support. Especially on tiktok, making it hard for kids whom might have had this happen to them, now think that they need to hide it because they might get made fun of. allowing the abuser to continue while they continue to suffer. It’s saddening and my heart goes out to anyone whom this has happened this happen to them and they don’t need to hide it, it’s not your fault.

@maracaegrizzley8734
@maracaegrizzley8734 9 ай бұрын
The reason is that learning about "consent" as an entire concept doesn't lead it to ONLY being applied against those that the parents *want* it to be applied against. Strangers and the like. If a child learns about Consent they start applying that concept to things like "I don't want to hug Grandma" and "Uncle Buddy makes me feel icky inside" and "I don't like that Preacher" and THAT is where things go sideways. Because the moment Consent starts getting applied to religious principles that's when people start seeing what's really going on around them and that leads to kids leaving the church and stopping contact with their parents for not protecting them better.

I haven’t watched the Nickelodeon documentary yet but I spent time working background on a few productions including ones from Nick & Paramount growing up and hearing about this honestly has me spooked. It was only over a few months but when you’re a kid on set during the school year they have dedicated trailers for studying and teachers on set so you have to do homework whenever there’s free time BUT unlike when working background as an adult you get to hang out with the other kids from the main cast in between shoots because we all had homework to do. I was also a victim of SA, not on a set but from one of my teachers when I was 11. The thing is when I raised the issue I wasn’t taken seriously and was eventually put on meds for acting out over the matter. I did everything I could to escape from my situation because I felt like I couldn’t trust the adults around me to keep me safe anymore. I would go out with my bike until late at night, stayed at friends homes, churches, temples as much as possible, and it’s how I ended up getting hired for background work as a child because I was actively trying to escape from something similar back home. It wasn’t until after I graduated from high school that teacher of mine got caught touching another boy just like he did with me. I broke down when I found out about what happened because when I was molested I thought it would end with me and it wasn’t until I found out from my friend that’s younger than me that I realized that he never stopped. To hear that those kind of things were happening on set too made me realize how pervasive this problem really is. 😔

Hey Phil, licensed social worker here, just wanted to point out that terminology has been changing. People are starting to lean away from the term “CP” in exchange for “CSAM” (Child Sexual Abuse Material) or “CSEM” (Child Sexual Exploitation material). The term pornography tends to have this perception of a level of participation and consent by both parties while the new terminology is reflective of how abusive/exploitative “CP” is. The change also allows for wider definitions as abuse/exploitative material can be more encompassing than pornography itself. Love the show! Keep up the good work. Thank you.

Asbestos is scary because it’s everywhere in older buildings, they used to throw full on handfuls into their plaster when working in schools, offices, you name it. On top of old insulation using it as a main component. I dipped my toe into the removal business in my state and my main take away was the system in place to regulate its safe removal is so strict and punitive for a good reason.

Basically if a place was built or had anything added to it before 1970, it's got asbestos somewhere. even in linoleum and wall tiles. the house i grew up in had a kitchen in the basement with asbestos panels around the stoves, "fireproof" plaster in two rooms because of the old gaslights (built in 1830s), congowall in the kitchens and bathrooms (yep, more asbestos), and ancient asbestos-cotton-wrapped copper wiring in it. How they managed to sell the house when gramma passed with it all intact AND a spring and cistern in the basement bewilders me.

Hollywood and the modeling industry are known to be predatory in general, but to avoid trouble they have always enforced this "if you want to work in this town you keep quiet" rule, one that even people that make it big in these industries still decide to not break despite their influence. Say what you want of social media and the "me too" movement, that people are willing to speak up despite ramifications shows that they work and should be celebrated for achieving their purpose, which is transparency. P.S: Having parents on set means nothing, some parents see their children as money makers and nothing else, they couldn't care less about their safety.

I’m work for the State of New Hampshire Asbestos section and it’s a common thing I see. A lot of people think it was banned in the 1980s but it was only successful for about a year. We still find asbestos in new products regularly which is why we require asbestos testing for any renovations or demolitions here. It’s a surprisingly large industry that’s remained hidden because asbestos is really good at what it does and isn’t harmful until you get the microscopic particles into the air. And as a side note asbestos products aren’t labeled as such they say things like chrysotile or crocidolite.

I had (obviously too optemistically) figured they had gotten it mostly gone and it was "just a few fringe people" but.. yeah I guess not? T_T the idea that FGM is being treated anywhere the way that MGM (circumcision) is in western/judeo-christian cultures is... scary. It sounds from your comment like its a bit reversed to how it is here in North America, where we have people trying to raise awareness to how MGM is a bad practice and should be dropped, but its slow going because it is considered normal to do when you have a boy baby. I'm just gobsmacked this is still happening when it should be obvious (it seems to me) that either way it is disfiguration and mutil@tion of a child and thus wrong. I have so much trouble conceiving of a place where this is considered "normal", but I guess it must be like how we think of the MGM here, if it is a matter of education on a "cultural norm"? I hope the situation is able to improve swiftly and soon! It's horrible to think of what those people are going through, just living with this as part of life...
@hippygirl1386
@hippygirl1386 9 ай бұрын
No it's a little bit more complex than a cultural norm from what I understand it's a bit more like they genuinely believe women do not have a right to enjoy pleasure. Pleasure is a thing for men to experience exclusively and if women experience it then it's sinful. Also it's much harder to find a man to marry a woman who has not had this procedure done to them. She will be considered lesser than a woman who has had it done. Less pure less chased less good in the eyes of culture and religion. It has nothing to do with like biased medical research that is determined that women grow fungus down there if they don't get it done. It isn't a medical treatment for a common injury either. Also no woman has had it done voluntarily and then said afterwards that sex was just as good. The goal is to push women down in society and make them lesser than sexually. The idea that a women could enjoy herself and climax is bad thing that should be prevented at all costs. Can you imagine them trying to do that to boys? Taking a 13 year old boy and holding him down and cutting into his penis with no anesthesia with the goal of making it so that he can never use it again without severe pain. Not a mistake or a failure to do the procedure right but the purpose of it.

We also know that Joanna refused, and her whole family was killed as punishment. Except there was asbestos in the building, so they had to stop demolition and bring in a specialized group to remove the asbestos. The concept that we didn't know that was there before kinda scared me. We need to find old schematics and documents of materials used in buildings when built. That way when we get ready to remodel, renovate, or demolish a building we know what we are doing and prepare for it properly and safely.

The thing with asbestos is the issue is really when it gets aerosolized or turned into dust (hence the demolition issue), especially with repeated exposures for employees working with it. Which became such a problem with how much contractors used it and how little we knew that'd be a problem. But its not like....radioactive. Most applications asbestos is used i it is chemically inert. I have asbestos tiling and mastic in our 60s construction kitchen. You could lick the stuff and its not going to do anything. The kicker is going to be ripping it out. It more than likely it isn't worth the hassle and dust contamination issue. So we will just tile over it and have a weird 1/2 inch step up from our living room.

Hearing the comments from the Ned's Declassified cast was deeply upsetting. I've been wanting a reebot with the cast for years, but hearing the way that they mocked the victims makes me lose respect for them. Abuse in the industry is not a secret, but it doesn't make it any less problematic, especially knowing that the people meant to protect these kids took advantage of them in such a horrific way. Speaking up is incredibly hard to do because of people like this, and I would have thought that them being in the industry themselves would entice them to be supportive towards others in the industry, but I guess a shred of support too much to ask. They should be ashamed of themselves, and I hope their comments don't have a major impact on those abused on set. There are no words for how absolutely revolting it is to see them joke about it. Childhood trauma, especially of this kind, can stick with people throughout the course of their life and every single person who's experienced it should be given the opportunity to speak up about it without the fear of being mocked and ridiculed. Devon and the rest of the cast should take a long hard look at themselves in the mirror and figure out why at 30+ years old, they still think it's appropriate to openly mock people when they open up about their trauma. It's not cute, it's not funny, it's disgusting and just shows the level of immaturity that they still hold at their grown age. Shame on them.

@jnyprz I agree that the intention behind it matters, and I understand that some people joke out of discomfort. But posting a video on social media mocking it while saying "we shouldn't laugh about this" doesn't really make a difference. I understand that this may not seem like a big deal for some, but situations like these are why so many victims don't feel comfortable speaking up, and if he really wanted to crack those jokes then the backlash shouldn't really be a surprise given the context of the situation. It was inappropriate, and they said it themselves. Nobody's stopping them from telling a joke, but jokes are meant to be funny. There's nothing funny about making jokes like that at the victims expense. I understand that comedy is meant to be subjective, but it's not free from criticism either.

@@Nova_3579 youre deciding it’s not funny because you feel like it was laughing at the victim. I thought it wasn’t funny because it just wasn’t a good joke (seemed like a bad to be there joke). You’re still picking and choosing what’s funny based on who is affected. You can’t do that. Either laugh at all jokes that don’t have bad intentions (and are well written) or don’t laugh at any joke at all. In your mind what is ok to laugh at? Hating your job? “Ha ha that’s funny. Because I hate my job” Well some people don’t have jobs. You going to stop laughing at them because homelessness and employment are serious! Intentions matter. And of course joke writing.

I work as a custodian at my university and asbestos is literally in every building everywhere. It's all hidden in maintenance closets and behind walls, and they just got rid of some old asbestos glue off the walls. It's kind of scary once you realize it's everywhere still

It is insane that I am hearing about FGM again in 2024. I am a Ghanaian guy and I remember reading about it as a kid and being taught about it when I was young by a teacher and I never heard a single good thing to come from it. It was just health complications and discomfort in the future of women who experienced it as kids.
