This match up was so hard to watch for Bayern fans. 99% possession 0 goals. Pep Guardiola must of told them to NEVER lose the ball. The result was passing the ball outside the penalty box the entire game.

You really think he told them to just pass the ball around the box, without trying to create chances ? Madrid is a top 4 team in the world, and, this being a semi-final, were extremely motivated to defend well. Which they did. From a tactical point of view, the one mistake I think he made was to start Manzu in the striker position. Real have two world-class center defenders; they completely nullified Manzu as an offensive threat. And, since he cannot pass, is not a playmaker, and generally extremely ineffective more than a few yards away from the box, meant that Bayern could not play through the center. In this Lahm highlight video alone you can see that almost not a single central pass is made. In my opinion he should have started Götze as a false-9 to draw out Madrids center backs, which would have created space for everyone else.

Pon Chik You really think I thought Pep told them JUST to play passing? I meant Pep emphasised on possession more than the other games just because they are gonna deal with lethal counters. This has psychologically caused the players to play more conservatively, hence the lack of attack.

***** I still don't think it's as simple as that. You bring up valid points, such as psychologically the players being more cautious with the ball and willing to take less risks. But overall I think what hindered Bayern more than anything was that they couldn't build-up play centrally and that Madrid just defended deep and, overall, really well. It's not easy to score when there are 21 players in the final 3rd.
