Ph Hirshhorn plays Geminiani, Gidon Kremer listens. Kremer was 'supposed' to win the competition but Hirshhorn did after an incredible performance of Paganini's violin concerto. Kremer became 3rd. Images from 1967 at the Competition. Hirshhorn talks about Kremer ...

When I heard him for the first time playing Paganini concerto no.1, I was really shocked, I never heard someone plays this concerto like him, Everything was so clear with a very rich tone. The violin world has lost one of the greatest violinists!!

hi, I have studied with Hirsschorn, his last years of his life. He had 2 operations caused by braintumor. after the first operation he had to reduce his performing. It was really a nightmare to me when he died. It s lovely , his sound. perfect.

You are so fortunate to study under this genius, his vibrato & spiccato reminds me L. Kogan, the Paganini messenger.

Did you study at Utrecht's Conservatorium with him? I had friends who studied there with him. In Rotterdam we had Kantorow and Gruber.

As played here by Hirshhorn this baroque music is a pure jewel aimed at speaking directly to the soul. It stands amongst the purest most perfect violin playing, producing the most lovely sound and music.

Please, reconsider your decision and put some more videos of Hirshhorn on youtube. I think, the world should know more about such an amazing talent, his magical and beautiful violin playing. Me and my family are wathing these couple of videos over and over. We have heard him live in Riga - Latvia, when he was very young. It was magical

I was at his recital in Riga - Latvia, I loved his playing,I heard the magic, but I was to little to understand his really hypnotical powers. Please, please ... we would love to hear some more

For all the people interested into watching a little bit more of this documentary ( But not the WHOLE documentary ) you must go to veoh , type " Philippe Hirshhorn : tragic hero " and you'll the information. Unfortunately you'd have to download veoh client to see the whole thing, but it's free and definitely is not a waste of time. No spam intended !!

The video is a documentary is called "The Winners". 4 previous winners of the Queen Elisabeth competition of Music are interviewed many years later. The 4 winners here are Hirshhorn (v, 1967), Senofsky (v, 1955), Bezverkhny (v,1976)and Moguilevsky (p, 1964). I already posted 2 excerpts with Berl Senofsky and just posted another one where Mischa Maisky (cello) talks about Hirshhorn and where Hirshhorn is watching a video from himself playing Poème of Chausson.

He passed away at age 50 of, apparently, a brain tumor. I don't know if he stopped long before, but he was also teaching violin at the Brussels Conservatory. There are several very, very good violinists nowadays, few have the same musical & technical gifts, but none of them has this magical, hypnotical, charistmatic power Hirshhorn had when he was playing. I think M. Maisky would agree with me ...

This is one of the most beautiful violin sonatas. It is as demanding as a Bach sonata. But to play it with the intensity & passion of Phillippe, well,it requires the highest level of expertise. Possibly Josef Hassid can be compared to him.

There are only 2 fragments where he is playing in this documentary and which are now on KZbin. There are a few scenes with an interview with him just shortly before he passed away, but I'm hesitating to put them online ... let's say that to me it is a matter of respect ...

Mr. Hirschhorn - unrelated(luckily). Probably there are more stupid people than me, but i checked his name before writing it. And on all the discs that were edited while he was alive the name is written as i did. I think i can assume that he knew how his name had to be written. The "c" came later in because some stupid guys at the label DOREMI were too lazy to check thoroughly.
