I was a late viewer to this Becoming Filipino vlog that has enthralled million viewers/subscribers in Utube. I had to to go back to the early years of Kulas’s story, join his barkadas and new found friends, quite taken up with his winning ways, kalog antics, and at my 79 years of age slog through his strenuous journeys, treks to the mountains, sailing the rivers/seas and indulge with gusto his appetite for local, off-the ordinary food. Every now and then, I catch a glimpse of a winsome, beautiful girl doing cameo role, delicately balancing personal relationship and a background glimpses of her simple ways and guarded deference to the Kulas blogger. But……things changed when we saw her with more robust presence as she nursed Kulas to health. I have as a Filipino though living in the US, slowly becoming protective of Catherine, because I do not know where the storyline leads us to. I am so familiar with the history of “hanggang pier lang”, where filipina girls end up at the tarmac, pier or whatever you call it, broken hearted while the guy flies home. I am wary and in knots cause I like the story to end like all good stories end. But …..Kulas be carefull. Do not let the storyline go awry or many filipinos, young and old, very old like me, will not be as sweet as your langka con ielo with ice cream. Remember coffee barako can be bitter if you like it sans cream and sugar. Please remember that, eh!
