Thailand is much better then the Philippines the living cost you get more for your money and the health care and food is world class the best. For what your paying for rent in the Philippines you can get much nicer place a condo on the beach for the same price.

Hi Brent, I've been living in Thailand for a little over a year now. Im in a beach area called Jomtien, just a few miles from Pattaya. I have a nice 1 bedroom condo, walking distance to restaurants, shops, immigration and the beach. When im not traveling, I live on about $1300 all in. The infrastructure is good, and there are all the services and conveniences needed. There is a bus station down the street that goes directly to the BKK airport for like $5. It has AC and a bathroom, and it's only a 1.5-hour ride. Or take a private taxi to the airport for $35. Ive been to Phuket but found it much more expensive than this area. Krabi and Hua Hin are very nice, too, and much more affordable than Phuket.

I’ve never been to Southeast Asia, but I’m really staring toward Malaysia, Indonesia, and then maybe over to Vietnam Cambodia area and then Thailand kind of slow traveling all the destinations just like you’re doing. If Thailand is just go to Thailand, but I would give Malaysia a chance maybe Jakarta Indonesia. I’m going to start traveling in about 10 to 12 months. After Asia, I’m going to come back to the states hang out for a while then I’m going to ride the euro rail from Spain all the way up to Northern parts of Europe, then over to Ireland and Scotland. Then probably down to South America. Unless I make it to the Philippines and fall in love with the Filipina! lol

You can’t stay long term here in Thailand on tourist visas. By longterm I mean multiple years. Currently you can enter visa exempt for 60 days + a 30 day extension. You can probably do this several times. If you are over 50 you can stay indefinitely in Thailand on an O visa but it has financial requirements similar to the SRRV in the Philippines and the Philippines SRRV is cheaper than the Thai O visa. There is the new 5 year Destination Thailand Visa. It is targeted towards digital nomads but there are medical and classes options that are not quite clear yet.

I am in Dumaguete now, been coming here yearly going on seven years. I am getting bored of this place. No night life . Not safe to walk because no sidewalks and crazy drivers. Out of stock all the time and it’s gotten really expensive. Women are crazy. I am thinking on bailing for Hua Hin. I will make a decision next month I think. Good luck on your decision. Hey Brent, I am considering the Philippines or Thailand too. But it will be the first in either one for me. Food, infrastructure, and healthcare, look better in Thailand. Like you, I would enjoy meeting a lady too, but my concern is the lack of English speaking for the majority of the Thai population. How did you navigate the language dilemma during your month long visit previously? I don't want to sit next to a Thai woman and continuously show her my translation on an electronic device? You can't carry on a meaningful conversation with just a translator. I think the translator would be okay for some basic and necessary dialogue, but not a lengthy and personal conversation. What say you? Thanks!

You've made the right decision. The Philippines is fine to visit for a week or 2 but it's not ideal for retirement. Everything is designed to cater to locals. Everything in Thailand has been constructed to cater to foreigners and locals alike hence the modern infrastructure, ease of doing business...etc.

First of all, you will always be a foreigner in a foreign land in Thailand. The government doesn’t want you there on a long-term basis they just want your money and make it hard for you to stay there for any length of time. Living in a country where you don’t speak the language and those people speak very little English will get very old very fast.
@VintageThaiLadyBoy
@VintageThaiLadyBoy Ай бұрын
That is how Thailand keeps Thailand Thailand. Bending over backward to accommodate foreingers? Have you seen news from the UK lately? And, how about learning the language of the country you want to live in? You could also use it in Laos . It's basically the same language. Currently, the most watched non-English drama series in the world on Netflix are Thailand's "Master of the House" and this is just a beginning.
@WorldFocused
@WorldFocused Ай бұрын
That's not entirely accurate. I think you are describing the Philippines. Why would Thailand make everything easy for foreigners to visit and retire long term , it's because they value foreigners and of course their money. The Philippines wants your money and give you nothing in return meaning they expect foreigners to visit and invest in the country but at the same time make it extremely difficult for foreigners to live, for example, it's extremely difficult to do business in the Philippines, heck, even installing PLDT is difficult. Transportation, healthcare, immigration..etc and everything else is designed to repel foreigners. I think you are overstating the language barrier in Thailand, you don't need advanced English skills to be able to get by either in Thailand or the Philippines.

@@bert-bb3cmI actually expected to be at least decent, like most foreigners who believe the hype about the Philippines from foreign vloggers in the Philippines, I was shocked to find the complete opposite, it's not worth the hassle. If having clean streets, quiet neighborhoods, courtesy is considered high expectations, then that's not a place worth investing our hard earned money in. There are far better and cleaner destinations just a flight away from the Philippines. But enjoy your paradise.

The rainy season thing is something that you’ll contend with in Thailand too. And in Thailand you’ll be at a greater disadvantage due to the language barrier. The Philippines has English as its second official language nationally. I personally would rather be where I’m able to communicate with folks. But that’s just me. And I’ve yet to visit that part of the world. But I have a Filipina aunt. She’s the widow of one of my Momma’s brothers. That’s why The Philippines is a bucket list item for me. To visit … not live. I have ADD and bipolar. I’m on meds and am in therapy for the bipolar. But I know that my meds are not legal everywhere in the world. What advice do you have for people who take meds (especially psychotropics) and want to visit The Philippines? Especially getting through customs (not United States) with their meds. I’m Andrew. My meds are a daily necessity.
