To everyone pointing out that Fort Drum was an American base, I think the lesson of Fort Drum can still be poigniant. Poetic even. The fort was built in order for Americans to keep hold of their colonial ownership of the Philippines. However, in the face of the Japanese onslaught, the Americans and Filipinos fought alongside each other as former rivals and even died for each other. Fort Drum at first represented a terrible colonial past of subjugation for the Philippines... Yet in its final act of service, instead of fighting to dominate the Philipines, Fort Drum was fighting ALONGSIDE the Phillipines, (and thousands of troops that were hastily retreating to safety). Sure one good deed does not make up for dozens of past wrongs... but in its last days, Fort Drum used tons of lead and gallons of blood to form one heck of an apology. A fairytale monster putting itself between a former enemy and an even bigger threat. The US colonial era symbolically ended when the fort was finally shut down after ww2... Its a passing of the torch where the Filipinos were given their country back and proof they can rely on themselves, but they still pay respects to what came before. That's why it's a national landmark.
@antlionworkerfan2007 Жыл бұрын
I’m pretty sure you’re just overthinking this, considering that the video is framed completely like it’s a piece of Philippine innovation and strength against the unstoppable Japanese empire when in all reality it’s just some random American relic of their former history of imperialism throughout the pacific

It was unique among forts built by the United States between the American Civil War and early World War II, as it was a sea fort with turrets. It was captured and occupied by the Japanese during World War II, and was recaptured after U.S. forces ignited petroleum and gasoline in the fort, the conflagration killing 68 Japanese soldiers and leaving it permanently out of commission. Due to the high temperature caused by the conflagration it took five days before U.S. soldiers could enter the fortress. The now-abandoned fort was named after Brigadier General Richard C. Drum,[2] who served with distinction during the Mexican-American War and the American Civil War, and died on October 15, 1909, the year of the fort's construction. The island and the other former harbor defenses of Manila Bay fall under the jurisdiction of Cavite City. so no filipinos have claim it was part of build by them

I love how they left out. It was built entirely by Americans and crewed by Americans. you guys aren’t unstoppable you’re literally just a small child the US is babysitting.

The US Navy could sink that easily and it is clearly broken because the turrets do not work 😂

This is unsinkable, and genuinely gorgeous. But when there is a battle and a real "BATTLEship" is needed, this rock's ass is stuck here forever.

This is American, Filipinos never built it or used it, they build it as a defense turret but shaped like a battleship to fool the enemy that they have a bigger fleet in action and it's name is the "Concrete Battleship", this doesn't represent anything Filipino at all

Wait i’m confused, even if the americans made it, it never said that the filipinos made it, it just said they owned it? Let’s say your friend gives you money and says it’s all yours, that’s technically yours now but not originally, so why are people mad?

Because of the way it is worded it completely excludes it’s history as being constructed by the United States… I’m Irish and even I am pissed off at the fact that they are trying to portray that it was built by the Philippines as if they had any hand in its construction.
